i have a 88 yota 22re. i have tired everything for this one. it has a hard time cranking. itll turn over an fire and try. only way to get it to crank is to hold the key over and let it turn over till it cranks. itll try like crazy but wont quite fire up. have to turn it over so long itll run the battery dead. if anyone can help pleasee let me know thanks

 

Checked for spark? How many miles on the plugs, roter and cap. How do they look? Test your ignition wires.

How many miles on the timing chain?

 

ive replaced all of that. also put a new timing chain and gears in it.

 

Are you sure the timing isn't off?

 

im thinkin it might be the distributer?

 

it was the first time ive attempted a timing chain but i read the haynes and checked it so many time it ant funny. bottom is set on 0 and top is at t.d.c.

 

Chain also has to be on the correct timing gear teeth. Do yourself a favor and make darn sure that the firing order is correct, then check that the distributor is on the correct tooth.

 

alrite ill check it. the chain was on the right teeth. only prob i had was gettin the distributor on the right tooth. still not 100% on that one

 

Did this issue start imediatly after doing the timing chain?

 

Set the engine on TDC #1 Cylinder. The roter should be pointing at Spark plug wire #1. While you are there check the firing order!
If the distributor is not in the correct position remove the cap,remove the distributor, point the rotor
to about 12 oclock reinstall it. As you insert the distributor the rotor should rotate counter clockwise untill it is pointing to the position of #1 cylinder.

no it actually fired right up and ran and idled just fine then it set for like a couple weeks then started this

59. Install distributor
Install with engine at TDC for a 22R or 5° BTDC for a 22RE/REC/RET
Set the distributor at the 12 o-clock position
Upon insertion, it'll turn ~35° CCW and the timing will be close
60. Start up the vehicle.
The timing is probably off since the distributor was moved.
To get the vehicle to idle smoothly adjust the distributor freehand or set the timing the right way.
With the timing test connector (TE+ E+) shorted, set the timing to 5° BTDC on the 22RE engine
With the vacuum line disconnected from the distributor, 0°BTDC on the 22R engine
Be sure and watch for good oil pressure and change your oil and filter after about 2000 miles
And warm the engine up with the radiator cap off and the heater control to full heat until the thermostat opens.
This will ensure any air pockets are flushed out of the cooling system.
Top off the coolant as needed before installing the radiator cap.

pull a spark plug cable from the plug, push back the boot so you can see the metal connector, hold it 1/2" from the engine block (ground), have someone turn it over for just a moment, and you should see a spark arc from the cable to ground. if you have spark, check your connections and timing. if not, repeat for the cable going to the distributor. if you have spark going to the distributor, replace the cap and rotor (your contacts may be worn); if no spark from the distributor, it could be your coil.

 

found out the problem 2 bent valves. had no compression in #2 and #3 spark.

 

I traded my 4 wheeler for a 87 truck. Clean nice little truck but it won't start. Guy told me it needed a start but could push start. So that what I did and it runs great but don't let it die without a hill. I have tried 2 starters new battery and also bypassing the key and running straight from battery to starter. It will turn over and act like it wants to start but it wont. Iv been reading a lot but I can't seems to find my answe.most people say the push button starter works for them but it's not working for me. Any ideas?????
