No compression in the #1 cylinder

150 to 160 psi on the other three cylinder, headgasket was replaced last winter with a toyota HG, eb peformance head and cam. less than 5000 miles since replacement, checked the valve clearence they are all within spec. so whats the problem burnt or broken valve or a hole in the piston? the hg was replaced due to a oil leak between the timing cover and the head.

No compression at all, as in ZERO?

Got to be a valve issue or piston hole. Rings won't cause zero psi. What alerted you to the problem?

I am in the process of fixing this same problem.... 40000 miles no compression cylinder #1
Got the head off and found Keith Black pistons with a crack in the top of it....Ha and I thought I got a good deal on the truck.... That's what I call tuition....paying to learn something the hard way...

Yup; and it won't be the first payment either.

WoW... and I thought keith Black had to be high quality stuff since KB is one of the top names in TF. I would say something since that simply should not have happened. Who knows maybe they do something really cool, like 4 new slugs!

Yeah there service department sucks... called 4 times.. sent emails... No reply!!!Talked to other 22re builders and decided to go back to stock... so 94TOY22RE if you find you have KB pistons make sure you do your homework. You may want to change them back to stock. I used Enginebldr.com... Ted is very helpful, and always responds to emails

I would never have thought KB would let his name get sullied by sub standard stuff. I'll stick to speed Pro now.

Nope it still has 155k mile factory pistons, It started a few months back really hard start hot or cold and bad idle. Everything checked out with the Fuel and ignition system. then i checked Valves, all with in spec and then i checked the compression

When I checked into problem I was told I could pull #1 spark plug and use a scope to see the top of piston. But at that point I figured I had a serious problem and decided to just tear it down. I will also mention that I had oil pumping out of the dipstick and the exhaust was smoking. I did a few searches through google and yotatech and I gathered that it was a piston or ring. So I removed valve cover and turned crank to reach tdc and I could hear a loud hiss... I thought it maybe a valve, so I continued to remove everything. Upon removing the cylinder head I had one of those " Well there's your problem" moments. So I am now rebuilding motor inside of the truck ( it only has 30k on it) Hone it - new rings and pistons...hopefully have it running in a couple weeks. I hope this helps you. The part that pisses me off is that I purchased a cherry picker and motor stand and now I have gone to far to get the motor out. So I'm hunched over on a step ladder doing a rebuild..... again tuition -paying to do it the hard way.lol

@beedy89:
Engnbldr doesn't use Keith Black pistons, as far as I know. Your posts are relevant in as much as you both don't have significant compression on #1 cylinder. Other than that, I think you should start another thread for your issues unless you can find some other substantial link to 94toy22re's query.

I didn't check the compression at full throttle, i also checked the compression on my 84 22r and had 155 and 160 on all the cylinders, just to make sure i wasn't making a mistake.

Standard procedure for checking compression is with the throttle wide open so as much air as possible can enter the cylinder and continue cranking until the gauge reaches maximum reading.

yeah, you should be hitting 170-180 psi... however thats WOT... its not really that big a of a deal to run WOT as the results will be consistent either way, just a different control variable... in other words, running compression without WOT you'll still find a bad cylinder lol but you wont know the "actual" psi of each cylinder.

Anyhooo, you sure u got the pressure guage adapter in spark plug properly? You could have a cracked head, bad valve seal/seat, cracked piston, cylinder wall, who knows... to get 0 psi means you have something significant. Where as all the air being compressed is COMPLETELY escaping without even making a reading on the gauge.

The fact that your top end is completely new I got my money on the bottom end, unless you've overheated this motor, in which case it could be a HG/cracked head etc
