Extreme Negative Camber...

Picked up an 84 X cab yesterday, and have no complaints, other than this horrible camber! Ive been searching YT, along with Google, Youtube, etc. trying to find a way to make adjustments to fix this. I cant seem to find much, as it seems its not much of an issue with a solid axle truck. As it is, im scared to drive this thing up to the gas station, as I feel im either going to swerve off the road, or get pulled over for looking like I just left an Irish pub on St. Patricks day. I have no intention in getting the measurements or angles spot on, but simply getting it adjusted to approximately how it should be. Plus, these tires are wearing quick on the inner edge. I appreciate any input in advance!

Got pics?

Because camber would be caused by bent housing, bad trunnion bearings, bent spindle, bad wheel bearings, something like that. It looks like the top of the tire is either further out than the bottom of the tire or vice versa.
Like older VW baja beetles, or some sand rails. Their back tires looked like a "V" when viewed from behind the vehicle.

Improper toe would cause the tires to look like they are pointed in towards each other at the front of the vehicle(toed-in) or at the back of the tire(toed-out).

Which exactly are you having?

Hahaha, it pretty much looks like the pic above! Maybe not THAT extreme, but its pretty bad. If you were to look at it from the front, knowing that the camber is bad, you could visually notice it. The housing seems to be problem free, but there is a bit of fluid leaking from what ive told is probably a "bad axle seal". Could that be the cause of the problem? I cant imagine it having THAT much effect on the camber. Either way, I intend on putting in some nice, beefy Marlin EcoSeals! From what I understand, toe-in (or out) can easily be adjusted by spinning the tie rod. Im curious if theres a simply point of adjustment like this to help fix my issue...

If its in at the top, thats prob a bad trunnion bearing. Its possible axle housing or spindle or wheel bearing, but if you're certain those are ok, then trunnion bearing. The leaking could be a bad axle seal, but I would bet that the wipe seals are junk also. Get a wipe seal, trunnion bearing,(knuckle rebuild kit) wheel bearing set and just rebuild both sides. Its very easy. Use the same shims under the bearing retainers that you take out. If the shims are chewed up, you should be able to get a close approx thickness from the old ones. The kits come with new shims. If you can do wheel bearings, you can rebuild the knuckle.

If it were mine, I would jack it up, get the tire up off the ground, grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if/where there is movement... An alignment shop will do the same thing, and offer to repair it for a healthy sum. Then they will prob find some other probs and tell you that its gonna kill you if you drive it without letting them repair it... and it might...

Thumbs up

Havent updated for a while, but figured I would fill anyone in that was genuinely interested in what was going on, or possibly having the same issue. Basically I ordered Marlins axle rebuild kit, figuring no matter what was wrong, it couldnt hurt to throw some new gaskets, seals, and bearings in. Well, when I got the passenger side torn apart I found the issue; the lower knuckle bearing was literally in hundreds of pieces! New bearings, gaskets, and seals in= no more steering issues or leaks! Thanks to everyones advice! I did indeed jack the front up and grab the tires, and there was a significant amount of play. I still cant believe Im alive today after seeing how bad the situation was! Also, for anyone thinking about doing knuckle work with no experience, Id say dive right in! Very straight forward, and the help of toyospearo's sticky and 4crawlers link (above) helped a ton!

which marlin kit to get for axle

Ok trying to figure what kit to get there are 3 , one is just seals and gaskets for like 50.00 - the other is a servicce kit also for 99.00 and has bearings for the knuckle . and the other is super extreme price of 179.00
So if anyone could let me know out of the three witch one I should get for the rebuild prob, the 99.00with bearings I assume . Thanks

Depends on if you need just knuckle bearings or wheel bearings as well. The 179.00 kit has trunnions bearings, seals, wipers, felts, and wheel bearings and seals. If you need just trunnions, get the 99.00 kit.

Question camber issues

OK thanks rockblock . Here's another question staying with the same theme!

I just did my wheel bearings 2 days ago and they feel loose again and I got some wobble its either both knuckle rebuild and bearings . I tightened them and bent over the tab to lock them in place and eveything ? thanks in advance anyone.

First thing you should do is determine where the looseness is... 12 and 6 o'clock, or 9 and 3 o'clock? And once you figure that out, research if others have had this problem, read through their threads completely, if you are still at a complete loss, then you should start a new thread and we can figure it out.

We have hijacked this thread enough.
