1986 toyota pickup with the 22ret
I start it up and drive away, after a couple minutes of driving the temperature gauge rises almost to the red, then falls back to normal within a couple of seconds. Everything seems fine so what does this mean? Is there something wrong or is it normal for it, but i don't remember it every happening in the past. Could it be a faulty temp sensor? Any ideas???

 

When was the last time you changed the thermostat and / or coolent? Don't buy a cheap thermostat either. Toyota thermostats are the best. And spend the extra $$ on the Toyota red coolent.

 

A normal condition, don't worry about it and do a search on the subject.

i believe the thermostat is the original one still

 

my 88 22re did the same thing. long story short, headgasket is blown. you may or may not have water in the oil. but it can also leak into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust. you might try some of the quick fixes/sealants. i ended up trying radiator flush and finished it off. then did a head gasket.

 

I got the motor rebuilt 12,000 miles ago then i blew a head gasket and replaced the head gasket. The temp problem was doing the same thing before and after the head gasket replacement. But i also have notice that the rise of the temp occurs when i have the heat on!

I had the same problem and it was the thermostat

 

It is a known problem. Toyota even issued a technical service bulletin on it.

 

I agree with the Termostat that has been mentioned, but since we are on temperture gauge issues, I wanted to add another problem and fix that I ran into.

A while back I was mentioning that my wifes truck water temp guage was going from half way to cold. I actually forgot about it until I drove it today and it did it again. I pulled the water temp sensor and it had green corrosion on the sensor cleaned them with a brass wire brush and then I cleaned the contacts that goes to the wire as well with electrical contact cleaner. No more problems. Stays just below half as it usually does. I knew it wasnt overheating, but still like having a guage.

Here is a picture of a dirty Temperture Sensor. I have seen worse. I chipped some of the scale build up off so you could see a difference.


The sensor sits just below the Cold Start Injector in the Intake manifold. Uses a 17mm deepwell socket and is a 5 minute job.

I had the same thing, up and then back down to normal. Mine wasnt too the red, maybe half way there but nonetheless, unsettling haha. Thermostat replaced, problem punched directly in the face. Good luck!
