It may be true but I'm not 100% sold on that yet, the 85 fsm makes reference to the 22R-EC engine under the electronic control section, I assume EC standing for electronicly controlled. Also the auto parts stores that I have been to only list parts for 22r or 22rec, no 22re. If the C in rec stood for California why isn't there a 22RC? Also, at least on the early 22re's they might actually have less smog stuff on the Cali models then the federal/Canada models, like no air injection tubes on the exhaust manifold.

There is a 22R-California model.
I am currently looking for a new Emission Control box for my 81 and guess what, it's year AND California specific. The motor may be the same, but the electronics on the carburetor aren't.

I'm aware of the fact that there are california emissions vehicles and federal/Canada models, I believe it's noted on the under hood emissions sticker. Having some different components I can understand needing a different brain, I'm just not sold on the C in rec being for Cali, I've seen the question come up a bunch but it always seems like a guess and not a fact. Why would the parts stores not have both 22re and rec options. Also online you will see people saying the C is for a bunch of extra Cali smog stuff, but from what I've seen there is not a bunch of extra smog stuff at least not on the early efi motors. Maybe the carbed models, I don't know?

This is getting off subject so let me ad that the early blocks, pre 85, also have the teq logo cast in the block on the exhaust side. As far as I know it's not on the later blocks.

The 22R is a carburetor engine
And 22RE is a fuel injected engine\
and a 22RTE is a turbo. . .
Am I Correct on this?

Here's one for ya guys. I got a 22r. Single row timing chain. Exhaust ports are round but have a small hole above them. Carbon makes it look like the exhaust manifold was pear-shaped. The Pistons are domed. is this an 83 or 84 block when they change it to the single road timing chain. Can I put a 20r head on this block and change it to a double road timing chain. Ty for any help

But im not sure what year 22r I have.. pre-83 or 84.. can I turn this into an EFI engine? Most of the identification on this post is not present on my motor.. help?

You should start a new thread and include pictures. I don't think the factory efi mounts up to the 20R head, 22r head yes.

In parts stores only some parts are california spec o2 sensor and other emission related. in Canada Ive never had options as california is the hardest place to smog

That depends on the vehicle and year. Speaking only about the early 22re the emissions diagrams for federal/Canada models actually have more smog crap.

hello, new member here
Got a78 2wd pickup, the sticker on the valve cover is faded and the badge on the fender says its a 20r.
took the carb to a shop to get it rebuilt or a new one and the guy saw it and right away said, thats for a 22r, and sure, went back to browsing and yes, its a 22R...

how do i know which 22R I have, if in fact it is a 22R?

Look around on the block for a casting that says either 20r or 22r, possibly drivers side. As far as the carb I read that the 20r carb is round on top as apposed to square on the 22r carb.

Earlier in the thread there's some info and I think a picture that tells how to i.d. the 85-95 block. I'm not sure but I would think the spark plugs would be the same regardless of year. I suggest NGK.

For reference showing one plug fits all..
