Hi I'm new here, I've been on Marlin's forum since '07 and came here since this forum moves faster. I've got a problem with the way my gas pedal feels. Its like an on/off switch the way I can't go from idle gradually to speeds. It is way to touchy for wheeling and when I put my duals in would probably be breaking things if not fixed. I have checked the circular spring around the throttle shaft and it is fine, lubed it all up including the cable but still no difference. Has anyone had the same issue or is it just how the early 22RE pedals act?

I was thinking of making some sort of extension for the throttle body arm and welding it to the existing location of where the push socket goes to get more leverage and maybe a smoother, more gradual pedal. Any thoughts?

 

i'd try disconnecting the throttle cable, to try to isolate if your "notchiness" is at the pedal hinge, within the cable path, or at the throttle body.

you could have some interference at the pedal, like something bent from it being mashed, or you could have something snagging the cable and need to replace it.

or, is it operating smoothly up to that point, and you're having some kind of hang up within the t-body, and it needs a good cleaning?

 

With 220k on the clock, the cable may have worn through the sheath, that is a good point. I will check both and try to pinpoint where the problem is. I had the same problem on my VW where the cable running to the back wore a hole in the sheath and was binding up and holding the carbs open, had to kill the engine when it got stuck at WOT .

 

I attached a coilspring w hooks on the ends to the rotateing linkage at the carb to increase the resistance to mashing the pedal when I had issues years ago w the touchy foot feed and throttle not returning all the way to idle. I experimented and stretched the spring a few times and got it just like I wanted it. It is a little firmer than stock but I like it.

 

I found my '85 was like that. The main issue is the throttle linkage on the early 22REs. It is a real Rube Goldberg design!

2 things I did to fix it. One was set the dash pot so that the spring loaded plunger in it helped lift the throttle open:

The second thing I did was to add a stronger throttle return spring. This way as you press on the gas pedal with increasing force, it doesn't just pop open when the linkage pops over center, rather the spring is resisting the pedal and you have a better feel for the position of the throttle plate with your foot.
