Nah, don't do all that, man. Search around on here, or better yet, google your problem and it'll probably come right back here somewhere. Mine were doin that too, but intermittently they would just not work for 5 seconds, then come on. Ya gotta pull your wheel off, get into the switch back there and clean the contacts. It's pretty painless. Scale of 1-5, maybe 1.5.

If cleaning the switch doesn't fix it replace it. They aren't too expensive

I had a problem with the headlights on my 88 4Runner at least a year ago, prob two. I believe this is the thread that I used to help me. I took apart what misterzee was talking about and soldered it solid. Fixed the problem. If this doesn't do it for you, go to the General Electrical & Lighting Related Topics and search for "headlight problems." When I searched that, it came up with 31 results. Good luck.

There is an easier method you can try first:

Get a can of Caig DEOXIT & spray the switch liberally-- work it every way for a minute or so, then let it dry 5 mins & try it again. That stuff is like liquid GOLD for electrical contacts!

As stated above, it's most likely your dimmer switch in your steering column. To test it, get a multimeter and do a continuity test between pins 5 and 13 on the big plug just under the steering column. You should have continuity when your high beams are either "flashed" or on. If you have continuity when flashed but not when on then it's dirty contacts inside the relay. It takes about 5 minuets to pull it off and clean it up.
