A few 2RZ swap questions.

So the 22re in my 1990 4wd rig has decided to start chewing through the timing cover, and with 340k, it's time to put something else in. Doing the swap itself isn't a big deal for me; I turn wrenches for a living and have swapped many Hondas, put a Nissan motor in an RX7, and a 1JZ into a 2wd p/u.

I have a line on a 190km 2RZ with all accessories and ecu, wiring etc. So now that I've done several hours of research, I'm left with just a few questions:

1. Radiator- is the stock one good enough, or should I upgrade?

2. Bellhousing- Research tells me I need the 2wd Taco bellhousing to use with my W56 transmission. Correct?

3. Clutch- Obviously (?) a 2RZ flywheel and pressure plate to bolt to the 2RZ. How about the clutch disk? Does a 2RZ disc work with the W56, or a 22RE disk, or am I going to need something else?

4. PS lines- I’m guessing I’m going to need a custom pressure line made up?

5. Fuel pump- Is the stock 22RE fuel pump adequate for the 2RZ? The pressure specs for both motors are nearly identical (33-37 PSI for the 22RE and 33-38 PSI for the 2RZ), I’m just concerned about volume.

6. IFS clearance- My rig is IFS. I do have connections to have a custom oil pan made, I’m just wondering if anyone know if I”m going to need to.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Dirk

You need to do extensive fab work to the oil pan to make it work with the IFS, I looked into it for my truck but it is lots of work and not worth it in my opinion when I am going to SAS some day. From what I remember everything else should work fine.

Extensive fab work? What do you mean?

All you need is a T100 rear sump oil pan.

It only works on straight axle trucks, the IFS gets in the way with the 2rz and 3rz motor, there is a guy on the Marlin forum that was doing it but never finished. He pretty much took the mounting surface of the 3rz oil pan and cut reliefs into the 22re oil pan and stretched it to fit the 3rz oil pan flange.

You can PM big mike about it he should know more about it.

Check out the October 2008 issue of Petersen's 4wheel &karmas off-road. Its a yota tech special. They swapped in a 97 3rz in to a 86 yota. Page 43 to46. Marlin Crawler did it. Check there site or call them

I am just completing a 2002 3RZ swap into my 87 4Runner. All mechanical work is complete and we are working on modifying the wiring harness, then off to the muffler shop for new exhaust. I will post a swap thread later. To answer your questions...
1) Stock 22RE radiator should work fine. That is what I am using.
2)Bellhousing - use a bellhousing from a W59 transmission. This also places the clutch and starter on the correct side (drivers)
3)Clutch - flywheel and clutch assembly for the 2RZ must be used
4) Power steering pressure hose - you are correct. You can also check wrecking yards for pressure hose from a matching truck with a similar engine.
5)Fuel pump - 22RE pump is perfect as you stated
6) Oil Pan - use a 2wd T100 pan as Scuba stated. It must be modified to fit around the front differential. Since I am not much of a welder, I bought the oil pan and sent it to Chilkat Designs in Marcola, Oregon. They have modified several of the oil pans for people. They also supply/fab a motor mount to use when bolting the 2RZ/3RZ to the stock 22RE motor mounts. Check out their website. Good guys for advice as well. Have completed a few 3rz/2RZ swaps themselves.

As Scuba said - check out Marlin Crawler's website. They have a "3RZ Swap Knowledge" forum with a wealth of information.

Hope that helps. I'll try to post pics this weekend.

mel63, how much did you get your pan for? I got a quote from toyonlyswaps.com for $500 for a modified pan, thats when I gave up, I even had a line on a 2rz with everything for $200 but couldnt justify spending that much on a pan, and with next to no fab skills I thought I would just wait to SAS.

This is the reply I got back from big mike when I pm'd him a while back about it.

Thank you for the PM. I personally do not have any experience with doing a 2/3RZ-FE conversion into a 86-95 Hilux truck. We have a member on our forum, ifssucks (http://board.marlincrawler.com/index...profile;u=2282) who started doing this back in 2004/5 but never posted any information if he finished or not. He has not been on our forum since 2005 so I am not sure if you will be able to contact him or not. But I highly recommend sending him a PM or an email to see if he replies.

James,
I purchased the oil pan for approx. $120 from my Toyota dealer. Chilkat modified the pan for $250. Since I live in Eugene, they are only a short drive, so I had zero freight. This cost to modify an oil pan seems alot cheaper than the expense of the SAS conversion IMHO.

There is not alot of info out there about swapping a 2RZ/3RZ into 86-95 trucks while keeping the ifs front. The guys at Toyonlyswaps (Cliff & Justin) have completed this swap many times for their customers. I obtained alot of help and advice from them.

Hope that helps.

Yea, it is cheaper than SAS but I was planning it from the start so when I was told $500 for a pan that I wouldnt require after the SAS, I gave up, I think I would have done $250, coulda, woulda, shoulda. Thanks for the info.
