1990 4runner A/c works but bogs engine down

I have a 1990 4runner with the 3.slow 4wd and man trans, the a/c blows cold air but i cannot use it cause it make the truck hard to shift because it bogs the engine down a lot.

Any ideas what might be causing this.

Thanks

How much does it bog it down? Some engine bog is normal because it takes alot of energy to spin the compressor

Enough that i cannot use it, it makes it hard to shift. I was wondering if its the compressor pulley or just the compressor is to hard to spin.

i have the 3.0 which i believe is different. doesn't the vsv control the idle up for the 3.0 could be wrong. the idle does go up a little when i turn the a/c on. how much should the idle increase. Mine goes up about 100-300rpm.

Ok i was lookin at it and the vsv has that large adjustable spring. is that the adjustment for the a/c idle speed?

Your idle rises 3-400 when you turn the AC on?? Mine goes up maybe 100-150.

Only one to find out about that adjustment spring.

it seems like the vsv is working properly. I haven't had the car for too long does the a/c rob the car of that much power in these trucks

The power loss is definitely noticeable. I don't know what you mean by "hard to shift", though.
