I live in the southwest, where we often go long distances offroad.

Since my range is so poor on my 4Runner (17mpg @ 15 gallons = 255), I need to add a spare gas tank. 17 is a bit optimistic since it's quite hilly out here and gas has ethanol in it (at a cost of 10% mpg over non-ethanol), and offroad uses more, not less.

Any vendor suggestions or any used ones available?

Any issues to report with yours (install or long term ownership)?

 

I saw some pictures (not sure if it was here or not) were someone took a gas tank from a chevy blazer and mounted it between the frame rails were the spare tire mounts and plumbed it into the stock fuel lines. I remember them saying they could go over 500 miles between fill ups.

 

I'm looking into this but plan on using an early 90's ford rear fuel tank. You can get them new at a very reasonable price and I plan on using the ford fuel pump to transfer fuel to the stock tank. These tanks are 19 gallons and much smaller than the chevy blazer tanks (34 gals but hang real low). If you do a google search you can see some writeups on it.

 

Im not talking about a full size chevy blazer gas tank, im talking about using a gas tank from an S10 blazer.

Nice links! I spoke with Wesley at NWMP, the location of the fuel filler neck may pose a problem for my setup at full articulation stuff on that side.

I'll have to see what it takes to Y into the regular filler. I'll crawl under this weekend.

The spare clearance with the tank is another concern. While departure is "good" to the bumper, my bumper drags on rocks all the time.
I need a bumper-mounted spare anyways.

 

I was only slightly annoyed last winter (in southwest Colorado) when the aux tank filler kept getting iced up - it was nice having an extra 85 lbs over the rear axle for traction. So I've had my eye recently on trying to get my hands on an extra fuel door/filler neck pocket so I can take the filler neck into the passenger rear "storage" area and up to the area just above and behind the wheel well. That would pretty much solve that issue and shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish.

 

I'd be concerned running chains with that setup...

I need to finish the lift and locker install, then the tank is up next.

This thread has a great idea on how to plumb a truck which is going to be dragged across rocks and such.
