Want to throw an intake on my 99runner, 3.4

Suggestions?

anything with a dry element filter will work. People tend to over oil the oiled elements and it throws codes. look up isr mod. I'm running an ebay special aluminum pipe intake with factory box and afe dry element filter

Stock is best from my dyno tests, surprised the heck out of me. Didn't expect a lot of gains but sure didn't expect to lose power with an aftermarket intake.

Just remove the elbow from the stock intake and that is about as good as it is gonna get. Deckplate might add a little bit.

Here is my back to back dynos, they were done within 10 mins of each other. Blue is stock intake with elbow removed on an old dirty filter, red is with an cold air intake.



Gadget backed up these results, he also said that removing the stock elbow is about as good as it gets and the deckplate is mainly for the sound, doesn't give much in the way of actual gains if you already removed the elbow.

So don't waste your money on an intake, it will not help you other then making it sound better and look better under the hood.

There are no simple bolt on mods i would do to a 5vz other then a complete tune up. About the only mod for an NA 5vz i would even think about is headers but that is a LOT of money and time really, cams would be about the same price and gains.

Better off boosting it or leaving it alone IMHO.

the one that lets the least about of dirt into the engine...........and thats not cotton over mesh sure you can go k&n but you will be replacing valves later and washing mud out of the intake manifold, hoping your cylinders arent to badly damaged...........been there done that never again.............

I have a K&N full kit. Idk what the fuss is all about, I've had it on for six months with no problems at all. And loss of power? Ya right, I gained power and def. more throttle response.

 

I swore the same on my truck till i got it on the dyno, it is amazing what the extra sound and your belief that it is faster will do. Like i said the results shocked me.

I ran the test twice i didn't believe it. Swapped intakes 3 times on the dyno, back to back to back. The results are posted above. Each time i swapped intakes i lost power with the aftermarket intake and gained it with the stock intake.

Still don't understand it but the dyno doesn't lie. Gadget said he found the same results when he tested intakes as well, i asked him about my results because they surprised me so much.

The stock intake is really not the bad, no sharp bends, nice free flowing track, with the elbow removed it has about the best design you could get for a cold air intake box really.

Also if you went from a stock intake with the elbow in place to a an after market intake you picked up power for sure, that elbow is worth 5-10hp. But try the same test with the elbow removed and i bet it is a different story. Like i said, the dyno doesn't lie.
