IFS - clearance for larger tires

I am planning a Rubicon run with my brother, and he said to try 35's in place of my 33x10.50 which fit perfect. (I have a 87 4runner with a 2" BL)

Well, I tried the 35's, and turning WILL be a major issue, so I'll run it with 33's.

Then, I had a crazy wild idea. What if I swapped UCA and LCAs from side-to-side???
Would that move my front tires forward or back??? Would it work?

I am sitting at a conference, so can't play. I have a spare frame and whole front-end at home, and will try it when I get back, but I thought maybe someone here would have already tried it, or even just have knowledge around the possibility.

Thanks in advance!

kinda curious, but I am guessing if it was possible someone would have done it by now.

Biggest problem is that on the pre '95 trucks and 4runners, the spindle is already closer to the front of the vehicle.

Reversing the control arms would move your front end backwards

You would have to devise something for the torsion bar mounts.
If you moved the spindles forwards, you're CV's would take a pounding with all that articulation. Not only up and down movement but also forward. You'd have to move the front diff forward too.
All that modification and you'd still end up with IFS...
Doesn't seem worth it to me. As most guys would say, SAS it.

We took two stock prototype 2010 4Runners and a stock FJ through the Rubicon and made it. By stock, I am talking suspension, etc. (no lift) - they had 32" MT-R's and rock sliders. Yeah, the underbody touched a lot of stuff, but all minor. I think we did wrinkle the muffler though. It had recently rained so we needed to hook a chain at Cadillac Hill and needed the hi-lift a couple times.

Rubicon Run

Stick with your 33's and you will be fine if you have even a small suspension lift. Any suspension lift? Stock xfer case crossmember? That thing would be my main point of concern for getting hung up. I've got a 1.5" BJ spacers, 2" leafs, 1" body lift, 33's, and the bud built xfer case crossmember and I would take my 4Runner through the Rubicon in a heartbeat.

Oh yeah - I hope you are locked.

you could clear those 35's with some ball joint spacers no problem. I had a 3 inch body lift and ball joint spacers with 35's and theyre fine.

I have no body lift and no spacers and I got my 33 x 12.50's on using 4.75" backspaced 15 x 8's. see my build thread. Those 35's should clear if your using the correct backspace and they aren't 35 x 14.50 tires. But then again you have a different gen truck as well.

I really appreciate all the feedback to my wild-hair idea. I am fully locked with 4.88s, coil helpers "zuk mod" in the rear, and torsion bars cranked a bit up front. I've thought about some trimming, but the body is too clean! I think I will go for the bud-built crossmember. I have concerns about how low it hangs.

Thanks. Been through the whole thread. Didn't see anything about flipping UCA/LCAs, so I thought I would ask.

With the above, you should be fine. Unless you've seen one in person, you will be amazed at how much the bud built crossmember cleans up the bottom side for ground clearance. Its one of those bolt on mods that most skip because its a little pricey (I was lucky because the PO put one on ), but if you wheel it over rocks...or the Rubicon...you will love it!

I have a 1" BL and am going to bend flush the body seam weld up to the first fender liner fastener behind the front tires as mine hit at full lock. With a 2" do the 33's hit at all?

33x10.50x15 BFG KOs fit perfect. I think my wheels are 3.75bs, but I am not 100% on that as I got them used. Not a bit of rub front or rear.

I have seen the difference with the bud-built. Its not the product cost that I am balking at, it is the shipping! I was hoping there might be someone in California who carried his products, or something comparable.
