88 22RE starts but wont stay running

Folks,
88 4x4 22RE Truck starts but wont take gas to continue running. Changed fuel pump..same problem, changed fuel filter...same problem, changed mass air flow...same problem, changed ignition switch and harness...same problem. Dont know what else to change out!!Truck will start on initial fuel but will not run on its own after the initial gas is gone. Like the injectors might not be getting a signal to kick in or something. Will idle real rough if air intake is blocked but wont take gas. Any help, comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed

I have never had to work on my fuel system on my truck, so I may not be too much help. Do you know that the fuel pump is getting power and is pumping?

get your injectors cleaned? check that they are firing correctly? sounds like you run for a second on the cold strt injecor then your normal injectors arent giving enough fuel for it to run.

Sounds a lot like an issue with the VAFM. MAKE SURE you don't have any shorts in the harness leading up to the VAFM (there is no MAF on these trucks).

How do you *know* its not getting fuel?

Curious if you know or thats what you think? Once warmed up, is it OK?

Fuel pump pumping, or at least when the key is in the start position, Like Sebastion said, I believe its running on the CSI and for some reason the injectors arent kicking in???Put a new VAFM on itand that didnt help either. At least I have new parts on the truck and good spares too. Ha!
I can make it run longer by just turning the key to start position and holding it there without pushing in the clutch to keep the pump running so more fuel gets pumped up but once I push the clutch in and it starts that initial fuel gets burnt it will not take anymore gas and dies out. will check the injectors and wiring once again. Thanks for the help and if any more ideas come to light please let me know.

you should have someone turn it over and put a screwdriver or something on the injectors to listen for the little tick they make when they fire. if theyre firing they may be clogged and need to be cleaned. it may be in the wiring somewhere too.

Get a noid light and check if the injectors have power. Could be a problem in the harness, Splices coming apart or corroding. Check the ground going to the intake manifold. Could also be the solenoid resistor.

Could be a few different things. I would first check your air intake tube to make sure its not cracked, that would make it do that. Also your computer under your dash could be somewhere else to look also

Kids . . . 4crawler has a lot of this already spelled out. The VAFM or COR (circuit opening relay) is what turns on the fuel pump after the engine starts initially
The E1-FC connection is what triggers the fuel pump to operate via the Circuit Opening Relay
start with these 2:

Hey ed, did you ever get it figured out. I've been having a very similar problem? (Yes. I see last activity was 2011, hoping an email notification may awaken the answer). Not trying to resurrect. Sorry guys, Ive just at wits end.

re: 88 22RE starts but wont stay running

GasTurbine,
I did finally get the ol Yota running fine. It turned out that the fuel rail and injectors were partially plugged with gunk. Took the rail off and injectors and cleaned them really good with solvent and air, replaced the o rings ,drained the tank and put in fresh gas and some stabilizer (heet) and it fired up 1st turn of the key! I guess where it sat for a long time the gas broke down and turned to a sludge of some sort and me bein hard and headed and all, kept trying to get it to run, pumped that sludge into the injectors. Been running ever since! Hope this helps you out cos it bout drove me nuts!!
