Best performance for price on 20R?

I've got a '76 that I love and she runs great with good mpg. However, when I go up in the hills and load her with firewood I could use some more power getting up fire roads. Or just when a heavy load is in the back a little more oomph would be nice. I'm iffy on putting on a new weber carb because the stock carb is in fantastic shape. I'm also thinking of getting some meatier tires but sized for the stock wheels. Nothing crazy because I want to keep my mpg up and I drive her daily.

I agree, although it may take your top speed down a little. But if you dont drive it on the highway often it seems like a great idea.

I do drive it on the highway pretty often. And wouldnt that be pretty costly and time consuming? I dont know a whole lot in the way of automotive mechanics. I have always been able to fix my Toyota's with a manual and maybe some outside input, but re gearing sounds pretty in-depth.

Well you can find gears for relatively cheap from people upgrading to higher ratios. I've never done it myself, but it seems pretty straight forward.

Since when do people upgrade to higher ratios?
Sounds kind of backwards intuitive if you ask me.

Gotta get more air and fuel through it to make more power. Carb, cam, exhaust.

if you're literal 5.29 or 4.88 are both higher ratios then 4.10. most people just don't look at it that way

I was thinking about doing the cam. And the little bits around it as well (rocker arms, springs, etc...) but wasn't sure it it would be worth the money involved. And I really don't want to switch the carb, the last weber I put on didn't have a pcv port and the stock one I'm using is in great shape. Seriously considering the exhaust.

Modification usually implies $$$.
Is yours 2 or converted to 4wd? You can find third members all day cheap and spend an hour swapping them.

A 268 cam, tri Y header and maybe even 22R valves in your stock head. 2" or 2 1/4" max exhaust w/magnaflow muffler. Stock carb. Regear to 4.88 (easy, just switch out your third member chunks).

http://www.toysport.com/technical%20...tech_notes.htm In this might just find all you need to know of building a better 20R. Only cost time and money.

Okay, my truck is the standard 2wd. What does it mean to switch out third member chunks? How to basics?

Pull your axles out, unbolt the driveshaft, unbolt the center piece thingy called the third member aka chunk, put in a different one that has different ratio gears, put driveshaft and axles back in, drive. Figure a few hours to do it, unless you need other parts or end up doing a brake job at the same time, etc. Obviously, you need a different third member all ready to go before you start the job.

Gotcha. Because, a 5.29:1 ratio is LOWER, although numerically higher, than a 4.11:1 ratio.

he is right lol but it is kinda backwards lol

anyways the stock carb is best.
4.88 gears is cheaper then building a 20r.

a decent cam is almost 200 bucks. then you have to go with dual valve springs new valve guides and seals and caps. then you must get different head bolts. because building a head has to be done off the motor. I suggest arp studs. and stock yoda bolts suck. all your power comes from your head. Its a big head ache lol no pun intended

300 bucks for both 4.88 gears @ 60 mph you should push 2500 rpms or so Just a quick guess I estimate 20 mpg
