fuel tank swap

does anybody know if a fuel tank out of a 84 with using the 84 sending unit will swap into a 89

Before 88 they were slightly different size wise and measured in Liters not Gallons. Not sure about the sending units.

You can probably make it work though...somehow.

the reason i want to swap them out is because my 89's sending unit doesn't work and i don't want to spend 200 on a new one

Hey rusty I've been through the same thing. Save money in the long run by just buying the unit. You will have more time and money invested than its actually worth.

And for 89-95 ext cab and std cab are different

I believe 2wd and 4x4 might be different. Mudhippy could u clarify that?

You can get them to wire up to work in seperate vehicles but its nt worth it. Ask me how I know.

I was told (too late) that 1ttoyotaparts.com is cheaper. Looked it up and you can save 40-50 bucks from the dealership price of $180. I just bought one, the old one works until quarter tank or so, then freaks and goes to empty.

1988 Toyota 4x4 tank swap?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. Thank you in advance. I recently purchase an 88 toyota pickup 4x4, 5 speed manual, with the 22re. The brake lines are rusted and I can fix that, but it would not run and I could not hear the fuel pump so I dropped the tank. I discovered the lines from the tank are badly rusted. Toyota no longer sells the "Fuel sending unit/fuel pump hanger" nor can I find an after market. I'm not sure how to interpret the chart. What year (newest) tank/fuel sending unit/ fuel pump hanger would work? My son and I are fixing this up for him. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

This is where being on good terms with your dealer can help.

It might get expensive to go that route but find the physical size of the tank then find one that you can still get parts for and go that way.

Also you can research fuel cells I know you can get sending units that will work on your stock gauge but it does to some effort to find them.

I had a 87 4x4 I was having the same problems.

I rerpaired the sending unit in my 85 corolla gts...I've actually repaired a couple of them...
I'd imagine that our trucks sending unit is not all that different...

You just have to take the cover off and look inside...you'll figure out why it works untill a point then doesn't...there's a copper arm that no longer makes good contact through the full range of the float...
