22r vs 21r-u

hey guys, happy to be a part of your toyota forum, i've been with other fourms more related to diesel ford pick-ups but wondering why i didn't sign up sooner here, all irrelevant as i was just letting you guys know a little bit about my background.. i own an 86 22r toyota. i bought it at 130,000 and recently had a super severe case of blow-by at 156,000. by the way i love this truck to death because it has been a great truck thus far, imo i've done a good job at taking care of it but i can't say the same for the previous owners. anyways so i got a severe case of blowby so thought i got a killer deal for a take-out 22r with only 50,000 on it. engine came in, it looked almost identical but stupid me didn't check close enough to see if it was in fact a 22r.. its not its a 21r-u. I was hoping i could get some input from anybody on what they think, is the 21r-u as dependable, HP comparison, does anyone have any experience with the 21r-u, both my engines are on the ground so before i proceeded to go forward with installing the 21r-u i need to know if its worth it, or calling these guys back who gave me a 90 day warranty and getting an actual 22r. any input is appreciated and again i'm glad to be a part of yotatech thankyou

I would say call and get the 22r. I don't know much about them, but I don't know that I've ever heard of the 21r-u. Maybe some of the other guys on here can chime in, but I would say go with what you know you need.

with the 21R-U, you will lose about 400cc displacement... however, being that the 21R-U is a JDM motor, the power levels are similar to the 22R... just a tad less (due to the smaller displacement)

From what I heard they were a crate engine shipped in from japan, they're supposed to be very underpowered

I have a 21-ru in my 82 and I feel no power difference between it and my 22re intact it feels to have more lowend torque I havent played with the 82 much but other then I heard they are hard to get parts for I havent heard of too many problems.

okay so far it sounds like i better call and either get the 22r or my money back, my dad agrees as well. if 400cc less displacement is a fact then lets face it these little pick-ups need all the hps they can get, more torque is good to though.

no offense vance 164 i'm just going with the general census, question for you though is, is your 82 a play truck? its good to hear the 21r-u might be dependable in the event these guys attempt to stiff me. after comparing the two it is doable but i may have to interchange quite a bit of parts which i expected to do anyways but not to the degree that this engine came like

Oh yeah just remembered. They used the 21r-u in forklifts or something like that
