Finally changed my fuel filter at 110,000...

Changed the fuel filter on the 01'.
110,000 miles, still had the OEM filter on it.

"Mud" was pouring out of it when I cut it in half.

Write up to follow.

What did you cut it in half with? I wanted to cut my old one up but decided since I don't have a cutting tool that doesn't throw a lot of sparks it wouldn't be good to add spark to fuel...

Slow and steady with the hacksaw.
Put it in the vise and put the vise outside.

i take it as long as i check my fuel pressure, and it's within spec, then my fuel filter should be fine....correct?

says it's a lifetime part for my '92....can't really grasp that concept since gas does get dirty....

Yeah mitchell states it's an in tank filter for my '02 so I'm guessing there is another in line. . ok scratch that they just don't list a procedure for it. . so I'm guessing it's along the frame like everyother SUV

How often is this supposed to be done? I'm at 110k with what looks to be the original one and the motor runs fine. It doesn't look like a fun job to do since there isn't much room to work with it under the truck.

I replaced the original one on my 88 @ 207k miles. I noticed when I tipped it to drain the fuel from the fuel tank end of it into a can that the first half of what came out was gas. The last half was water. Both halves were rusty. Oddly though it was still doing a decent job, because the gas that came out of the other end(post-filtration side) was pretty damn clean.

Needless to say I noticed an improvement with the new filter. Not much, maybe +1-2 MPG and a bit more top end power.

it being the original filter sould come to no surprise. It is a "Life time part" and toyota states that it never needs replacing. therefore, not many replace it. I've replaced a few and nothing was wrong with them when they were replaced, and no noticable change was revealed.

Why do they say the fuel filter is a lifetime part?

Purchased an OEM filter for my 2.7L several months ago but never gotten around to replace it. Might have to do it this weekend.

I'd like to add something! Instead of cranking the motor to get the fuel going, just turn the key to the on position 2 or 3 times.

It can definitely be done that way also. I don't really see a problem with running the starter for three seconds though.

...because of the high capacity and quality of Toyota's filter.
