22re dies once warm and will not restart until cool again

Ok, i have been messing with this for a week and have broken down. I need help. 85 22re, starts nicely when cold, after it reaches operating temp if it is put in gear ( auto ) it dies and is very hesitant to or does not restart until it has had a cool down. It appears to be running very rich as the plugs are black. Also it will not rev past 4000rpm. I am reading codes 5 and 11.
So far I have set the timing to 5 degree BTDC, plugs replaced and gapped, new cap and rotor, wires, igniter and coil both swapped, ecu swapped, fuel pressure regulator swapped, distributor swapped, 02 sensor swapped, valves set, all fuel drained and replaced with fresh, new air filter, also the fuel pump is hot wired so it is always running and i can confirm good fuel returns to the tank, and it certainly in running better since all of this but still have not been able to drive it due to the stalling and then no restart. Anyone experienced this? Thanks!

ya, nice strong spark. It seems like it is over fueling and stalling out. I checked the throttle body right after it died and their was fuel pooled in the intake elbow. also the oil smells of oil.

Ok, I have just switched out the TPS and throttle body out of my parts runner, no change. Also i took it for a drive, it was hesitating and bucking like crazy at an anything less than 3/4 throttle. Also it was very down on power and would not quite get to 4000rpm and thats as far as it would rev. Any thoughts??

Also i have been able to keep it running now, it will restart but is very hesitant to do so. When cold it fires right up, warm i have to use throttle and a lot of blipping it to get it started.

Since this thread is 10 years old you might get a reply!

What trouble shooting have you done? Always good to know as much as possible.

How long till to the engine quits? How long till it cools down enough to start?

Check your coil they do tend to get hot then fail to work cool off your good to go.

Then anything getting hot can cause a open circuit .

Does it quit like the ignition switch was shut off or just slowly die?

fuel pump gets hot stops cools off it works repeat .clogged fuel filter causing the pump to work harder getting it hot..

It can be quite a few things work through one thing at a time in your trouble shooting

Haha thanks for the reply

Been having this problem for a little while now but at first it was just every once in a while the truck would just die when i let off the gas. First only when the ac was on im assuming because it drags the engine down. After two weeks it started to do it without the AC but very rarely then it kept increasing in frequency.

One day it didnt want to stay running and would bog down and die when i took my foot off the gas eventually started to not want to stay running some days it would start fine run for just about a second and then die. it will run perfect most of the time once it gets going because when this first started i was on a roadtrip and when it didnt want to stay running the first time i was 800 miles from home. Made it home fine except for the couple of times it didnt want to stay running on startup. Dont think it has anything to do with temperature because it was fine once i was on the freeway except for the couple of times it died when i took my foot off the gas, but it usually just doesnt want to stay running on startup

Anyway today it would not stay running would start perfect and then sputter and die after a second tried about 5 times then i jumped the fuel pump with the Fp and B+ and it started and ran fine for a couple minutes then i pulled the paper clip out and the truck immediately died. So I'm thinking its the AFM switch or a short somewhere not really sure.

Well jumping the B+ to Fp takes the EFI relay and The circuit opening relay out of the circuit.

Check those it might be the coils or the contacts in either relay

Yep the circuit opening relay was all rusted up. Plugged in a new one and it runs perfect.
