Budget build started....started 3-21-2011

Picked these jewels up over the weekend. I found the 86 ext. cab on ebay and told the guy I'd be up on Sat. to get it. While loading it on the trailer my cousin (who could make friends with Bin Laden himself) started talking to the guy about his property. He pointed to the barn where the 87 std cab was. Well, about the time it took to walk three hundred yards and say $150 the std cab was coming home as well. We got the two of them for $450 with celan titles!!! The 86 is running, but has a frame which was plated in the rear. The 87 has no tranny or tcase and a bum 22r, but hey for $450 I'd expect much worse in one truck. The kicker of the whole thing was I had my heart set on the 86 ext. cab. By the time we got home I swapped my cousin for the 87 since the frame is in decent shape, and the cab is rust free.

The interiors on both are really good. The 86 even has the original AM/FM radio which works. I'm taking that and the bed for the 87. My cousin is probably making out a TAD better since he paid $150 for a running truck. He got the trailer and dump truck from his boss WITH FREE DIESEL AND TOLLS!!! I have a complete rotted out 84 toy coming from NY, so the drivetrain is for the 87.

Going to cut the bed off tomorrow. More pics to come!!!

You're cutting the flatbed/cage off? Why? It looks good! Hit it with some rustoleum and it'll look even better!

And good lord, is that a NASCAR sticker on the side of the 86? Somebody has a perverse sense of humor.

What a deal, there's one guy around here selling a cage bed like that, he wants $300 for it, I'd love to find a deal like that, best thing I've got found at the moment is a 85 model Toyota for $800.

Well I added one to the pack. It's an 84 I got form a guy from pirate for $500. The frame is totally shot, but the drivetrain is in good running shape with only 90k original miles. I am going to use the drivetrain in the 87 and get it on the road within the next couple of months. Here's a flex shot.

You need to post them to photobucket or some other free hosting site (I use photbucket). Once you upload and save them them you need to get the URL code. This is at the bottom on photbucket. One you drag your cursor over the pic it will be bordered with a few other codes like HTML etc.). Get the one at the bottom which is the URL code by clicking on the box and it will say copied. Copy it and put the link in the body of the message (basically just click on the box and it will say copied, then use CTL V to paste it on the post). You will magically have pics in your post.

Man all you guys with these split bench seats are making me jealous. And is that an all-pro bed?

It was homegrown, but still a decent one. The guy was a mechanical engineer for Mack until they moved down to NC. Really cool guy.

Split benches are pretty cool.
But buckets are where it's at.

Btw, nice find.
That 84 is cherry, i don't see any problems with it.

You planning on using the SFA out of the 84 when you do the swap over to the 87?

yep. Just tore it down today. Got the drivetrain yanked out last week. Got to torch out the rear rear just for the third member and driveshaft and what's left is going to the scrapper. If you need anything let me know. It's got tan buckets and some other interior parts left. Let me know.

Sorry for the absence of pics where I take out the hubs and axles. It's a REALLY messy job and I'd have to stop and clean up before picking up the digi.

I got to torch off the torque rod bracket as well as some other un-needed brackets.

The dust shields were completely rotted. Does anyone have a set they are looking to sell for cheap? I may use marlin's dust shield eliminators. Anyone have any pros or cons on using them????

Well, I spent all day cleaning up the bay getting it ready to nest the 87 mini. Also got to choppin' the 84 apart. That was by far the easiest bed I've ever had to remove. The first pic showing the driver's bed I did by hand. I only had to torch the front section by the cab to get it off. Mother nature did the rest.

I ordered the axle rebuild kit from Marlin, but they are on back order. I still have to clean up the axle housing and truss and paint it. Basically, I have enought to keep me busy.

I got to some more hackin' today. It was about 90+ degrees today, but I still managed to get it torn apert all by my lonesome. It sucks as you get older your friends disappear when you need some muscles. I guess all the sports and dumb crap we did back in the day is catching up with us.

Anyway, I also got the rig in its new home so I can start the tear down on the IFS and such. Had to call the guy around the corner with a wrecker for that one.

The 84 is a couple of loads away from gone. I got to get the seats out and torch up the cab and that's all she wrote. More pics to come.

Nice!!! Even though it was trashed, it kinda makes me sad to see the '84 that way. Glad it's going to a good cause though!!
