Hey all,
So I have had my truck, 1999 2.7L 4wd 5spd, for about 3 years now. Have done a bit of maintenance on it since buying, new clutch,flywheel, axle shafts, exhaust, etc, nothing much to the motor except routine stuff. My problem is I have an oil leak that has gotten worse over time, started out as a drip or two and now over 4k mile oil change intervals I probably add 1 - 1 1/2 quarts. Its leaking from the timing chain cover. I don't mind replacing it, however it's a big job. I have something else to drive so if it takes a month working on weekends its no big deal. I am just wondering should I go ahead and change all the components like timing chain, tensioners, water pump, etc, while I am looking at it with the cover off. Or is there any product that actually helps fix oil leaks. The mileage is 159,000 miles btw. Thanks

 

yeah it is a good idea to change items like that when u pull them off. or u could be doing it again sooner then u want.

 

I suggest to just fix the leak and leave other components there. replace crank seal at most

 

Your going to need to replace the HG if you take off the cover. Taking off the cover without replacing the HG will result in a bigger leak. Id suggest a valve job while you've got the head off if you haven't already

 

Yeah I know I have to replace the HG, was also gonna do new Head bolts. Had thought about just doing a valve adjustment though.

 

Anybody else have any suggestions on fixing the leak? Could I re-torque the timing cover bolts and see if that helps reduce/ fix the leak?

Timing chain is a lifetime part according to FSM. Toyota water pumps on a 2.7L are bullet proof. I would just replace the head and timing cover gsket. I would inspect the guides on the chain for excess wear but at 159K, I expect you will be fine.

 

Uh, yes. Toyota has an array of different sized shims. Crappy part is that they are 7 bucks each.

To do it, you either need the SST's or you can do it the easy way and pull the cams.
