IIRC the 2L-TE is the fuel injected version of the turbo-diesel that's in Hiluxes, so... probably enough motor for a dd. I was actually looking at the specs today for it for some reason and recall them being pretty close to the 22R in the HP department though a bit more torque.

i have this motor , its been reliable for a while.. some say the heads are weak.. but if you have a pyro and your cooling system is fine you should have a problem..
dont know gas milage but i get about 400-450 kms a tank which is around 60 litres.. i have 4.88 gears 31s.

parts arnt that hard in canada we had a 2l and a 2lt which alot of parts cross over.. but toyotapartsales.com is toyota of dallas and can get most things too like filters and there are some jdm import companys in toronto that stalk hard to find parts.

so check the head.. listen to the overflow when you shut engine off for bubbles.. see if it smokes when you drive it.. i do get a nice roll if i pin it.. but during normal operation i get no smoke..
i def love my truck .. could be faster and there are better toyota engines out there.. if the price is rite i would def look into it

The 2L series is reputed to have a cracked head issue, but some feel that there is no problem as long as you do not overheat it. The factory fix for that was replacing with a head from the 3L ( the 2.8Liter) as these are same block...

The engine will do just fine as long as you treat it normal.
I've seen and repaired lots of those and only a few had headgasket problems.
They were used in just about anything with a toyota logo, so its normal to hear about some issues.
250.000-300.000 km without big issues is quit normal actually.

If you are going to swap this into anything, you will need the ECU and the engine wiring harness, as the E in 2L-TE stands for electronic injection..... The tank sender,and fill will need to be changed for a diesel compatible set up......

If the engine your talking about is toyotas 2.4 liter turbo diesel, then these engines are great, reliable, tough and got some Torque, I have the 2.8turbo and it's taken everything I can throw at it with no problems, no overheating issues of any kind and that's at 14 psi of boost !! Great engines, just change the oil every 5000km and shell go forever !

You can get a complete low milage Surf with a 3.0 instead of the weaker 2.4 for a lot less if you are willing to import it yourself:
$ 5000:

$5000-6000:

I just bought a 92 Hilux diesel with a 3L engine. Pretty sure I need a new head gasket and went to the Toyota dealer in Saskatoon and they barely tried to look up a number! did a little more shopping around and found a place in Edmonton that specializes in imports. 4 wheel auto in Edmonton. They keep stock of parts. Havent compared prices yet but they had great customer service.
