Muffler Bearing Replacement Time...

As you can see, my muffler bearings are just about shot.

What is the service interval recommended by Toyota for these?

While your at it you may want to check your blinker fluid and always be sure and lube your brake pads too!

Hey, you guys forgot to replace the kenueter valve and rotate the air in your tires. Man, I'd have to say those muffler bearings have just about had it.

I love fiction cause there is a change that reality can be much more strange.

Good one ALL!

Did anyone see Robin Williams in Bagdag a few days ago. "Good morning Bagdad"?

Looks like catastrophic failure!! I've never seem muffler bearings tear a hole in the muffler like that. I thought you took better care of your rig.

I guess it's true what they say about mixing lithium and non-lithium grease causing bearing failures. It came from the factory with non-lithium grease on those bearings and I have been using lithium grease applied through the zerk in the flange...

Live and learn...

It's hard to say, but this has definately been robbing me of horsepower for a while now... With the new ones in, the truck is much more responsive.

That might be covered under the emissions warranty.

I already tried that... the dealer told me that the fact that I installed an after market cup holder voided the warranty on my muffler bearings... so, I am on my own on this one...

It's a much larger project than I would have normally taken on by myself... I like to rely on places like the dealership and JiffyLube to take care of the difficult stuff for me...

Hehehehhehehhe... I would have never had this problem with the muffler bearings if I had just bought a 4Runner... hehehhe

I am still around and still kicking. I have been putting in my time on tweaking the truck and on other boards. This one seems to have slowed down for the holidays/winter. I look for threads that catch my interest, but I am afraid there is not much I can add to a "Has anyone used 4 low?" thread and keep a straight face

I have a shakedown cruise planned for this weekend, then a week in Canada, then a week in Hawaii in January, then a week in Arizona in March as well as all the runs I am packing in there, so I am staying busy

When are we going to wheel together

Rob, that is horrible. I jsut read a TSB in which they recomend removing the spark plugs and filling the holes with grease. (Leave a little room at the top so you still have a combustion chamber). During combustion, the grease is kind of vaporized, travels through the exhaust, and keeps the muffler bearings well coated, sort of a self lubing kind of deal. I call it pure genius. I've been having trouble with a mildly whining muffler bearing myself, luckily it has not exploded like yours did. I think I am going to try the grease method mentioned in the TSB, what do I have to lose? Anything is better than a squealing muffler bearing. Another thing a buddy of minde did was perforate the exhaust tube that runs between the cat and the muffler. This reduces the speed of air over the muffler bearing, greatly reducing wear. On rainy days water splashing through the holes and flowing back into the muffler keeps the bearing cool, again reducing heat induced wear.

Thanks for bringing this up Rob. One of those little things that we all ignore but always comes around to bite us in the end.

Rob,
I think I found the problem. I magnified the photo of your muffler bearing and found out that it is actually a low budget miniature ferris wheel. I hired a bunch of people to assess the problem (you can see them in the foreground of the picture I included) and as soon as they have a reccomendation I will send it to you along with my bill. Your welcome.

That last go around left a bad taste in my mouth... I floated the idea of doing it again amongst last years organizers a couple of weeks ago and it met with a lukewarm response at best... We'll see... Whatever we do, I would like to be out that particular Nazi Ranger's district...

Not that I am aware of. Those of us who went anyway took a lot of pictures and there were even a few "Non-Event" certificates drawn up and passed around, but I don't think anyone ever formalized anything.
