Auto tranny can't find gears easily

It seems that when I stop quickly, reverse and then change to 1st quickly, or shift from park into drive, the tranny has trouble finding the correct gear. There is typically a delay in shifting, and then if it had to go through multiple gears, it will take a long time (5 seconds).

Example: After stopping from a quicker pace, the tranny will have to find the gear, it will go from 3rd to 2nd and then finally to 1st. Is this the first sign of a failing torque converter?

Thanks guys.

Its possible the shift solenoids might be going bad, but have you ever changed the fluid and filter to see if that helps at all ?.
