Transfer case Swap? 93 to 98 5 sp manual

Hi,

I've tried searching here and google numerous times but can't seem to find anything on whether or not I can swap the transfer case from a 93 4Runner 5 speed manual to a 98 Tacoma 5 speed manual.

I'm in the process of getting ready to do a 3.4 swap and want to use the engine and transmission from the 98 Taco with the bell housing and transfer case from the 93 Runner. Is this possible as a straight across swap or do I need some type of an adapter????

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

from what i've heard the only difference is the tail housing, so use the crawl box from the 98 and then put the tail housing from your 93 on it.

Aren't they the same tranny?

Then why swap? That saves you from possibly messing up a not easily replaceable seal.

What am I missing here?

Thanks guys for the replies but I think you might be misunderstanding my question. The throwout bearing fork, slave cylinder, and the output for the front drive line is on the driver side on the 98 Taco and the passenger side on the 93 Runner.

For things to work I need to swap the sides for the front drive line, throwout bearing fork, and slave cylinder. Is this as simple as replacing the bell housing and transfer case on the Taco tranny to make it usable in my swap? Or should I just stick with the tranny setup already in the Runner? Tranny in the Runner has 205K, tranny from Taco has 102K. Hope I explained it better.

Thanks.

not to mention the 96 and later has a deeper bell and a longer input shaft. this makes bolting up possible but adds almost two inches to the driveline. you will have to move your tcase back 2 inches and do some d shaft work. if you switch bells to get your clutch right you need to make a spacer because your input shaft will be too long, unless you swap the input shaft off your old tranny into the new one which can be done but requires dissasembly of the cluster gear, not as easy as some make it seem.

If theres nothing wrong with the 93 other then high mileage I say stay with it , have it rebuilt if need be but the work to do the swap is not really worth it

Blake got the biggest of problems stated, but I'm also pretty sure the bolt patterns for the transfer case are different. If you look at Marlin's adapter lineup, the adapters for a gear driven behind the 3.0 R150 and the 3.4 R150 are different.

Thanks everyone! I think that helped me decide. I'll just stick with the tranny and transfer case from the 3.slow. If I ever have and issue with it, I just have it rebuilt.

Thanks again.
