Ok I have enough experience with the 20R and 22RE
What should I look for first ?
I haven’t even opened up the hood yet.
Is this a common problem ?

i check compression. none in #2, check it wiht my scope, hole in the piston.
what can i pull a 3.4 out of uesed and put in my runner?
will and 3.4 work ?
98 and up?
4runner ? tacoma? t100 ?

The basic 5VZFE engine is the same but some of the things screwed and bolted on to it changed. I'd recommend you keep all the sensors and anything electronic from your current motor. The injectors may be a different size, MAF may be different, O2 sensors, wiring, exhaust manifold...etc.

yes, you'd be buying a used 3.4 just for the long block (Block and heads). Have your injectors cleaned professionally. I wonder if a poor spray pattern burned the hole in the block
