Remote Hatch Glass Opener:

I have been wondering if any of you actually modify the rear hatch glass to go up and down with the keyless remote.

The remote on my '00 LTD can only bring the glass down, but not up. In order to bring it up, I either have to use the key or go inside the vehicle to press the "up" button.

What I plan to do is to modify the circuitry to be able to bring the glass up and down e.g. if the glass is up, press and hold the button, it will go down (this is normal), while the glass is down, if I press and hold the same button, it will go up automatically.

Has anyone done this yet...or know someone who has done it? please share your experience.

Thanks,

Nam

all later runner's do. I think that started in either 2000 or 2001. my '98 doesn't. I have to put the key in the hatch or in the ignition and use the cab mounted button.

such a useful feature. has saved me several times when coming up to the car with armloads of stuff to just push a button and throw it into the trunk.

opening the door, turning the key and bringing it back up though is not fun =[

Keisur,

So what you mean is all later models of 4Runner has the feature of bringing the back glass up with the OEM remote?

Mine is '00 but it doesn't...so that feature must be in 2001 and up I guess.

RTdawgs,

I wouldn't want to use another remote since I have to carry two of them. So what I plan to do is to modify the existing circuit in inside to make it work the way we want.

I will likely come up with a solution sometimes next week or so...as soon as all my finals are done.

Stay tuned,

Nam

i understand nam. i was thinking it would be easier to buy a modified remote from you and then program it to my vehicle rather than trying to modify my own remote.

I don't think you'll find the answer in the remote itself, the remote is just sending a signal to your controller box, then in turn it's activating the rear window circuit. The only possible way, is to add a circuit to the rear window motor control assembly, so when the window is completely open, it reverses the circuit. Then when you hit the button again, the controller thinks the window is closed and when it activates to open, it actually closes. Possibly adding a micro switch, so when the window fully opens it clicks to reverse everything, but then you'll probably need a timer circuit to delay the actual activation, otherwise your window may just open and close endlessly.

I've though the same thing in the past, why they just didn't have it close and open like the dash switch does.

Good luck in this endeavour.......
