After cleaning TB, it now needs adjustment. The factory service manual states there should be no gap between the stop and screw when the throttle is closed, but the information on the 4crawler TPS adjust page says to make contact and then turn 1/4 turn in to keep the throttle slightly open to prevent sticking. Keeping it open a bit seems contrary to what people on the yotatech forums are saying...to keep it closed down.

I've worked on cars with no stop screw at all, and then some others that have you insert a shim under the butterfly and then set the stop, but there seems to be no real guidance in the FSM. I'm wondering what other people are doing?

 

most are leaving that alone since it's set from the factory, if the idle is off it's usually because of something else. Well maybe not most but that's my opinion anyway. I am sure it will be some others as well though.

 

Unless someone has foolishly moved it, leave it. It's not meant to be adjusted.

But the 4crawler technique is correct for a stop screw that has been messed with. A quarter turn is a tiny movement: it doesn't open the butterfly, it just prevents it from getting stuck when the throttle closes, as mentioned. Even a half turn from the jammed shut position probably wouldn't be excessive.

 

Someone messed with it (the yellow "don't mess with this" paint is at a different spot and the nut is slightly rounded), I think to keep it from getting stuck because of all the crap they didn't want to clean. However, I could see how there would be tons of crap not letting it return to the original position, and some mechanic knowing that there shouldn't be a gap between the screw and the stop and resetting the screw. Maybe it's there for that purpose, for those who don't want to clean it out? And now that it's cleaned it up, there is a lot of gap at the butterfly.

The factory setting??? They had to have a procedure at the factory. Wish that manual had a little bit more info...some stuff is so detailed, some not. I guess I'll go trial and error it...but yeah, 1/4 turn doesn't seem to move it much.
