Put my 85 Pickup on the lift today and saw greese and oil all over the ball joints on both sides. I was going to replace the differential fluid and now I don't know if I need some seals or what. Should I just go ahead and get an axle rebuild kit for both sides? Where should I get the kit if so, contact a dealer or Marlin? Thanks for the help.

Get the rebuild kit and marlins inner axle seals. Good time to do your wheel bearings too if you need it

 

Yep. Inner Axle seals are leaking I bet.

For the effort it takes to do them might as well rebuild the axle and be done with it.

Follow ToyoSpearo's axle rebuild. Pretty straight forward, not hard. Lay out all your parts in order you took them off and keep things organized. Clean and paint parts that you want for that clean look. Good solid weekend and you should have it done.

One tip, pay attention to knucle shims and get proper preload on wheel bearings. Wabbit's rebuild thread on his website explailns more on this. Also 54MM socket is handy to have also. Wabbit carries them as well.

One last question, for now anyway... after ordering the rebuild kit and the 54 mm socket what other materials will I need? I have all the tools, but what greese, how much, I want to have all my ducks in a row before I get going? I already printed the FSM and ToyoSpearo's axle rebuild and made a binder for the garage. What paint should I use when repainting covers hubs etc? Any other odds and ends?... Thanks in advance.

They say to use "moly fortified grease" Easy thing to do is use just a little grease when reinstalling then use the plug on the outside of the knuckle and just pump half a tube in there and you should be good.

 

Here's a tip...the rebuild is going to get really messy with all the oil and grease. Get a large bucket, a brush, and a gallon of Purple Power or your favorite degreaser.
Make sure your axle housing isnt bent or else you will be destroying inner axle seals over and over again.
As for paint, I have had good luck with Rustoleum. I use Semi-Gloss Black on my frame and axles and did not use primer. Good luck!
