86-95 OEM 4.88 gears: were they also LSD?

hi all,

checking the rear diff. to find out why it's humming louder than usual, i see there's a tooth missing on my ring gear.

some guy online says he's got a 95 4Runner with factory 4.88s. but he also says they're fitted with Toyota LSDs.

really?

can anyone confirm that the V6 4runners with the 31" tire and tow package had limited-slip with the 4.88? this is the first i've heard of that.

thanx in advance, yall
Tj

Pretty sure, IIRC, that thing isn't a Toyota LSD...fairly sure...unless it's a Supra 8"...even then...

Factory 4.88's, yes.

that's what i thought too, BBP. the axle code would have to be a G145, for a 4.88 with LSD. i've only heard of G144s in US market 2nd gen 4runners, but i'm no expert. all i can find on G145 leads back to Japan or New Zealand.

$800 for front and rear 4.88 3rds from a 95 v6? too expensive!

Sounds a little steep. Obviously cheaper than new stuff and paying to have setup

i've confirmed these are G144, 4 pinion open diff 4.88 from 93 4runner. G145 would have been a sweet score. oh well.

i'm going to have to button it up and put it off as long as i can. i dont want to buy and install gears without some traction device going in as well.

i wish my truck would wait for me to decide when to spend money on it, instead of the other way around.

Factory LSD is an option. As you said, markets outside of the US had it. It's in the Hilux Surfs; a guy I will be wheeling with eventually has 4.88s with LSD in his Surf.

i have the 4.88 v6 diff with a supra lsd in it, but i stripped off some teeth on the ring gear, now its junk, cant regear it, and have to buy a new one. second factory 4.88 3rd ive killed in the last yr, i will be getting a 4.10 v6 diff and regearing it with yukons and my lsd for a stronger and rebuildable diff, im done with the oddball factory crap.

Way too expensive for stock gears with how knows how many miles. I would not pay more than $450 for a junk yard set. But I would guess it depends on what part of the country your in. I part out 2 gen 4runners and run accross 4:88's all the time and have sold a few sets on here and elseware. I usually sell them in that $3-400 range.

The 800 dollar option sounds like it would pay a good portion of new gears and a traction device, especially if you set them up your self.

Good Luck

I find you have to shop around. I picked up a G114 for $150 bucks and a G145 just two days ago for $175. Smoking deal if you ask me

Revival! Does anyone have the OEM part # for the thin ring gear that is required for the G144 third?

I think I remember them being $1k+ for the ring gear from Toyota. Stupid expensive. I don't have a part number off-hand, but you are better off finding one at a scrapyard.

Ok thanks, wasn't sure but wouldn't be surprised about that price. Around here they fetch around $300 for a complete 4.88 third so I guess that's what I'll do for the spare rear / future front.
