Rough Idle 89 22re 2wd Truck

I picked up this truck several months ago and so far I have done a tune up except for the fuel filter which I hope to be installing today. I seems to idle rough when it is hot out and there is some sort of high pitch whine when it idles low.

I did mess with the timing last night and it seems to run a little better but it is colder out than usual. It has 165k on it and there is alot of oil leaking. I think that it is just the pan and the valve cover hopefully. It hesitates slightly at low rpms in 2nd gear but it has plenty of power.

I love the truck, I mostly bought it to tailgate out of and I dont drive it very much. Just looking for any ideas on how to check any other systems to fix this problem. The exhaust is pretty rusty and I was unable to get the O2 sensor out also.

When you set the timing did you jump the terminals and set it properly, or did you loosen the distributor and adjust it by guessing ?. If the 02 sensor is original it needs to be replaced. Have the valves been adjusted ?. Also remove the throttle body and clean it, also make sure the vacuum ports arn`t plugged.

I can't get the O2 sensor out because it is rusted in the exhaust and I did just "feel" it run better with the dist.

Cleaned the tbody already and I dunno which ports to look at. I did an oil change this weekend and I noticed that there was coolant coming from the back side of the engine. It was a cheap truck and I just need it to last me for a little bit. I dont drive it much but wouldnt mind doing a full over haul when I have the time and space.

Right now all we do is drink and camp out of it for football games.
