22RE Rough idle

My normally very well behaved 4Runner is acting up. She is very rough at idle but if I bring up the revs to about 1000 she smooths right out.

Any ideas on what I should check first?

Having been around old Datsuns and Toyota's here's a few things I would do. Try spraying carb cleaner into the carb. Give it a good cleaning. If you're into it, a carb overhaul is the way to go. Check all your vacuum hoses. They can create the full range engine wierdness. Snug/torque your carb & intake bolts. Do a tune up. Plugs, cap & rotor, condensor, wires. Check your timing. Man, all this tune up talk...I kinda miss it, yet I don't now. I'm happy 'cause I bought my first brand new vehicle ever...well, sort of, it's 3 years old now. But after playing with old cars & trucks for 30 years, I'm glad I don't have to. Sure was fun and I learned a lot. Soon my boys will be driving...probably an older car. Skinned knuckles and greasy fingernails are just around the corner...:pat: again. Good luck.

First thing I'd look for are vacuum leaks. Check all vacuum hoses for any cracks and make sure they're not loose. As suggested above, spray carb cleaner around the intake area. If the idle speed increases when you spray the carb cleaner, then you've found the leak.

What butnut and Arnold suggest is right on the money.

Yep, clean the throttle body/carb, check for vacuum leaks, and check the condition of the spark plugs and the ignition components.

Red face

:pat: Douh. I had a feeling as I was dozing off last night...the 22RE is an EFI set up...not carb. ( ). My '99 is my first EFI...my '70 Celica Hot Rod (20R) had a good 'ole carb (big Mo-fo Holley 500 2 bbl.) and huge cam. My Datsuns had the tiny stock 2bbl (simple rebuild) and eventually dual 40 Dellortto's. Hope you get your 22RE purring again!

Hi Mack,
Check the tune up stuff, like they said. Did this happen suddenly? or was it a gradual onset? Some of the things to also check: the intake ducting between the throttle body and the air flow meter, maybe the EGR valve is partially open (carbon stuck on the seat), maybe do a compression check. If all else fails, come down here for one of Corey's Greenwater runs and we'll have a look at it.

David

Have to see if Corey can come up with a Navy smilie!!!

My '86 22R-EC was doing the same thing. I took it to the dealer and they replaced my o2 sensor and my TPS. Purred like a kitten after that. Just something to consider if all else fails.

I finally got a whole day off to play about and found the culprit, a loose vacuum line.
I also took the opportunity to pop my K&N filter out and clean it and the air box.
I got a  shock when I found motor oil all down the front of the engine and on the dirty side of the air filter. I was worried that I had sprung a major leak or blown a seal. After cleaning the front off and driving around I found the culprit, the oil change place didn't remove my skid plate when they drained the oil and took off the filter and my fan had been sucking the oil and spraying it over the front of my engine.I complained to the oil change place and the manager felt so bad about it that he gave me a coupon for a free oil change.
