so ive been reading on how to replace the shifter bushing and i have the general idea but when i go to push down on the ring and try to turn counterclockwise it wont go. can anyone tell me how far down it should go before it will actually turn because mine is only going down like 2cm 5cm at the most. it doesnt seem right i would imagine it would have to travel farther down to be able to turn. can i use wd40 to try n help loosen it to make it easier to turn?

 

You only need to push it down about 1-1.5cm at the most. Then turn it counter-clockwise about the same amount. Should pop up and be removeable with ease. WD-40 shouldn't be required, but go ahead. It's not going to hurt much that I can imagine.

 

hey choper where did u buy your bushing from ? what is it made of ? rubber or poly

@mudhippy thanx it came off eazy....i just didnt want to force it to much but i put royal purple tranny oil around it and it came off after letting it sit for 30 mins....
@waynes world its from the dealer im sure its rubber but i have to pick it up today but i read sumwhere dat da factory ones were poly so ill let u know for sure in a bit....

I'd recommend Marlin Crawler's. That's what my brother and I put in our 3 Toyota's and their tighter than they've ever been...

ok i have the new bottom piece but now i have another question it has to sides to it.....wich one goes down n wich one goes up its two tones dark green n black i only found the black part in my shifter when i took it out the other part was all over the place in tiny pieces.....the green part has 4 groves.which one goes down?

 

You should have ordered the shifter seat and bushing from marlin crawler, there better quality than the stock replacements.

 

waynes world heres a link with pictures to show you how everything is done......i found it after i did mine....its a very huge difference my tranny would only go into gear half way now it feels like new the gears are smoother than ive ever felt them....you should look into the crawler seat and bushing....everyone seems to recomend them over the stock ones i used stock ones bcuz i use my truck for work and i needed it done fast so i had no time to wait i got tired of pulling up on the shifter to get it to go into gear....good luck and i hope u have a eazier time then i did....ps. lubricate with grease bfore installing again it will glide right back in.

For anyone's information.........next time you refill your tranny, you should consider using a GL-4. RP, I believe, is a "multi-grade" type? Correct? The GL-4 specific type MT lubes make the brass synchronizers much happier. I mean, certainly you're fine for now. Just next time, consider it. It does make a big difference.

 

i did mine a month ago BIG difference. now i dont slap my knee when shifting. Sweet!

hey just wanted 2 say thanks again choper . i put my bushings n and made a world of difference , the bushing wuz disintegrated except 4 bottom ring .that black circle .

I bought the Marlin shifter seat and bushing and did mine.

I have an 88 PU, xcab, 4x4, 22RE, with what I assume to be a W56B tranny.

Interestingly, my shifter seems to be different than what is seen in the two links above. Mine does not have a 'push down and turn' type of retainer. It has a bolt on retainer that goes above the shifter spring.

Anyone else seen one of these?


Also, the seat I purchased was red. It went in difficultly. I rotated it on the pins but needed to tap it in to place, it did not just drop in.

Anyone else have a similar experience.
