I found a compete 84 rear end with 4.88 and a Detroit locker for $200. the previous owner installed the locker and gears and the current owner doesn't know the current miles. Is there way to check if everything is in working order without removing the third member and is it worth the 200 with unknown miles. the truck was in collision so there parting it out. thanks for the help

 

Grab the pinion flange and see if it turns smoothly, atleast 5-6 full turns both ways to be sure the ring gear feels alright, and that it isn't loose when you try to jiggle it. Then go to each side and turn and jiggle the axle hubs to check for the same type of play and smooth turning, also pull out and push in on them to check for end-play. If those parts checkout o.k. then it's probably in pretty decent shape.

I'd be all over it at that price just for the Detroit Locker and whatever's attatched to it. No matter what shape the rest of the axle is in. That's THE top o' the line auto-locker. Unless it's the Detroit e-z locker, which is the BOTTOM of the line and should generally be avoided. But I don't know how to tell which is which without looking at them.

What do you plan on doing? Swapping the gears from yours into it? Or do you have 4.88's already? Or do you just want the locker to put in the rear axle you have, like me?

 

IMHO its worth $200 if
-you can turn it by hand and there is minimal play in the gears and pinion shaft.
-Its a "Detroit Locker" not a luchbox.

 

i want to swap the third member out and then look for a ifs front 4.88 to pop up on here or craigslist.

 

The Detroit locker is worth 200. by it self, so go for it.

Hey man i have lockrite front and rear and i love them...and not very expensive!!! just an opinion

 

Lockrite lockers are TUFF! Detroit E-Z lockers say not for use with tires bigger than 32".WEAK!

I found one in Alma, AR for $200 on car-part.com. But that's the closest one I could find to you. You may want to look on there for yourself too. I ain't familiar with the mid-west(it is the mid-west right? I dunno...middle-of-nowhere it looks like to me). So it took me alot of more-or-less digging around in the dark just to find that one.
