P0171 CEL w/ strange rpm linked noise

I began to hear a strange rpm linked fluttering noise from the engine bay. It is noticeable in the cab but I cannot hear it over the noise of my engine while searching for it in the engine bay. It almost sounds like when I used to tape playing cards into my bike spokes as a kid.

Approximatly 3 weeks after I noticed the noise, I threw a p0171 code.

I checked for an intake leak by spraying starter fluid around the manifold and watching for an increase in rpms.

I checked for exhaust leaks by covering my exhaust and listening for leaks.

I suppose the code may have nothing to do with the noise.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I have a 99 t4r and have had the same problem, which I believe is fixed.
P0171 is a lean exh. indicated by the front o2 sensor, if you are sure you have ck. for vac. leaks ,dirty inj., air leaks after the MAF sensor. etc.

Then do a search on cleaning the MAF sensor, dirt on the "hot " wire or the thermistor wire would tell the ECM that there is low air flow and it could reduce the amount the pulse width of the injectors, and cause a lean condition, which may trip this code.

I delt with this problem for a while and I have gone over 100 miles now after cleaning my MAF with no CEL coming on. I am going to call that fixed.

Did you experience the above described noise with your code? Or do u believe the code is unrelated to the noise?

Could the noise be engine knocking from bad fuel/air combo. I just got my MAF replaced and the engine does response better and seems to have less noise though I only have driven it once since yesterdays repair.

I tried cleaning the MAF w no luck

I have replaced the MAF and front O2 sensor at the direction of two separate shops. pretty mad that they would not give me my money back for the diagnostic work i had them do to pin point the problem was wrong. $150 in diagnostic fees, $275 in sensors and my labor to swap them and i still have the CEL.

The second shop claims they will do more extensive diagnostic work for free next week. I am going to have him compression test all cylinders.

Both shops said the noise i am hearing is just noisy values and not worry about it at this milage. but then again, both of them couldnt get my cel taken care of.

any input would b appreciated. thanks

Go here and check out P0171, a few more things to look at.....could be as simple as a PCV valve.

What brand O2 sensor (A/F sensor) did they install? Make sure you get back the MAF sensor they replaced....I'm sure they didn't buy OEM to install.

If you want help with the noise, you're going to have to pinpoint it more than just the engine compartment.

How many miles?
