wanna help pick out engine upgrades? 84 22r

I'm going to be adding some upgrades to the engine when I rebuild it. I have it torn down in the engine bay and need to simply take it out and that's it. So, now I'm looking at parts that I want to add/put in it when I build it back up.

I'm looking to give it some more power, it will be a dd along with some fun off roading (nothing too extreme though). Smog tests don't matter and the vehicle has been de-smogged already (egr etc... removed).

- I have a weber 32/36 already.
- Was thinking about adding the electric fan to help free up the motor a bit
- I think the stock pistons and what not will do just fine since I'm not boosting
- I was looking at getting an upgraded camshaft (I believe new valves etc... need to go with that)
- Exhaust header. I have a 2.5" exhaust ran from the downpipes back with a proflow muffler

What are some other goodies that would help bring this thing some life (I relieve I won't have a v8 when I'm done and that's fine, but just looking for a little more than stock to get up large freeway hills etc...).

Also, any recommendations (for preferences on the quality of products) for places to get the item(s) would be sweet.

Go with a weber carb, a cam, and a header with full exhaust, that should give you a nice gain.

So i've got the weber already

Would you recommend lc for the cam and header?

There is also this one as well:

I was thinking the first one since I don't need the smog stuff. I would assume I'd get more performance with it. I've got an entire exhaust that I built with a pro flow muffler 2.5" all the way from the down pipes back and the cats have been removed and replaced with pipe/tube.

I would assume this is the camshaft kit:

Kind of curious, has anyone used one of these to fine tune things?

Curious about this as well? Any kind of gains from this setup on a 22r with basic upgrades as discussed so far?

LCE deffinatly has some nice stuff but its pricey. Another thing i just thought of is you can get a ported head from either LCE or engine builder, that would also add to the power gain.

Is it worth the price or should I go elsewhere to find comparable parts? I think the ported head is a little more than what I would want to spend. I haven't looked at the price, but can imagine it would be a pretty penny.

LCE has good quality parts, and like anything else, you get what you pay for. But it doesn`t hurt to look around and see if you can find stuff cheaper. As for the ported head, check out engine builders prices, im sure it would be cheaper through him than LCE. Even if you don`t get one it doesn`t hurt to check it out.

I took a look at the setup on engine builders site. It's not too bad.

Now I just need to see what kind of prices I'm looking at with the whole setup.

If I were to get the following:

Ported Head
Cam
Header

I also need a low pressure fuel regulator. I was thinking of the holly 12-804. I got the other one that jt outfitters has and it just plugged or failed almost instantly, I got another and it was the same story. Fuel looks clean.

Holly fuel presure regulators are good quality, and you shouldn`t have any problems with there regulators.

Ported Head Engine builder - $650
Cam Kit LC - ($400)
Header JT - $200
Holly 12-804 - $35 from anywhere
Weber 32/36 - Already Own
Full Exhaust - Already Own

Total is roughly $1300

I'm thinking that if I went with a ported head then the only place is engine builder. Haven't seen them anywhere else. Didn't see the ported head on lc.

For the cam, I would think that this would be crucial to have a good quality one, which makes me want to lean toward lc.

For the header, I would think that the quality wouldn't need to be so crucial, so a cheaper one from jt's or another shop could do the job.

Doesn't matter where the holly comes from.

Anyone have any input on any of this?

I am also looking to do an electric fan as well. Anyone have this done from a fan that they got from the junkyard? Just looking for a good donor I suppose.

Engine builder also sells cams, if i remember right he has three different cams to choose from, one is a crawler cam, one is a mid range cam, and i think there is another, but i can`t remember. He knows the 22R and 22RE engines better than anyone so you might want to call or email him to ask what cam is right for you. If you want an electric fan, find one from a junk yard that you can make work and then buy a wiring kit and thermostat and wire it up.

I might have to give him a call up. His parts are pretty reasonable for the most part.

Call Ted and talk to him.

Taurus fans work well.

I will give him a call either today or tomorrow once the schedule loosens up.

Any particular year on the taurus I should look for at the junkyard?

The way I was going to hook it up was with a relay controlled by the accessories or ign and have the fan actually powered right off the battery.

Several Taurus fan threads with all the details you need. Get the 2 speed Taurus fan. I picked one up for $25 at local junkyard.

if getting your head from Ted, i would also pick up the cam from him. 1-he installs it in the head before its shipped, 2-its only $88 if you add it to the head.

Yeah, I will probably do that, but what in the world makes the price difference between the cams?

Rough price:

LC is 400
Ted is 100

What is the difference between an rv and a performance cam?

I am getting my engine machined and rebuilt by Sunwest Automotives and they have rv and performance cams available, so I may go with their cams, which is why I need to know the difference.

I noticed that the lc kit comes with

# Street Performer Valve Spring Set
# New Aluminum Rocker Arm Set

Should I be concerned about these in my setup and request them or is it a standard when you get a new cam? Just don't know too much about the pros/cons of everything yet b/c I'm fairly new to engine rebuilding. I think once I get this figured out I will be set to go and can pull the engine.

The only other thing I can think of is if I want to go with the ported head from engine builder.
