87 4Runner, automatic, new engine, new turbo, running 225s (yes, really).

Won't make marks in dirt doing a WOT launch (put in D, punch it).

First Toyota, but assuming this has to be totally wrong? What will yours do? Videos welcome! LOL

 

The main reason your 4Runner has no power is because of the automatic transmission, the best thing you could do for your 4Runner is to swap in a 5 speed manual transmission, but if that`s not an option then regearing would be the next choice. Either one of those options will help you.

 

Yeah, I'm asking for non-clutch-dump events.

Like: Put it in first, let the clutch out gently, when the clutch is all the way out, pin it.

 

I can do it without dumping my clutch, lol.
you have an auto, though. so it's harder.

Just hold the brake, and the gas at the same time then rip your foot off the brake. . .

 

I don't have to dump my clutch at all, the auto's with the 3VZE's are pretty slow, and I have never driven, and can't imagine what it would be like to have an auto with the 22re.

Also, you have a huge blog there about your truck but no pictures......

mine wont either, it will in gravel though the brake gas combo is the only way i can burn out as well hopefully I'll get a 5sp swap soon

 

i have an auto 22re, cant peel out in dirt or pavent. i can peel out in dirt if im turning or using the brakes, burnouts usng the brake, are about 50mph on dirt and 20mph on pavement, im looking to do a 5spd. swap soon though

 

what?! i have an 88 pickup 22re AT not turbo, and i peel everywhere. hills, flat on pavement, and turning. if im on dirt all i do is spin. its annoying actually. i mean its a "one wheel peel" but i chirp all the time.

 

when my runner was still an auto (3.0) i was able to burn out in dirt. your trans sounds like it's giving up. not now but it will lolol. I swaped in a manual trans and it feels like a v8 until i hit 50mph lolololol...

 

well my truck is all clogged up so it lack alot of power...

my dads one freind has an 86 22r 5 speed 2wd, and i remember him telling mehes always flooring it, and trying to do burnouts, but the 22r's and re's just lack alot of power...wich is kinda odd for and old guy to say

 

Not the trans giving up, the motor not putting out any power.

This helps, thanks. Compared to the memory of my 1986 Honda Accord, this thing is gutless, I knew it had to be wrong. Valve cover coming off later this weekend to see if the cam was misinstalled when they rebuilt the motor.

 

Simple things first. Check your timing before pulling the cam cover. Both mechanical AND ignition. If either one is set incorrectly, (especially retarded) your truck will be gutless.

I'm 5 speed, but w/ 31x10.5 BFG MT's along with a Tru-Track posi rear, powered by the almighty (LOL) 22re, I can roll into the throttle and light up the rears in gravel or dirt easily.

 

lol, lets not forget that 22re's are only 96 horsepower at 2800rpm and 126 ft lbs @4800 rpm...im guessing thats probably around 50 horse at 1-2000 rpm lol not to mention the trucks a few thousand lbs. too.

3000lbs + 96 horsepower = pretty darn slow haha loll

but on a serious not, it does sound like your lacking power

 

Seriously, this threads response's are lame! I can't believe I just read most of it. OP isn't asking if you can peel out in your manual transmission.
Sounds like your tranny is slipping. Have you serviced it? Fluid condition? What RPM does the converter stall? How does it drive on the street going up hills?

 

get a book on transmission and read it..

watch that video on youtube about dumping a few cap fulls of atf in your intake..

 

ive never been able to figure out how to chirp my tires.. how do you do that exactly?

Hard acceleration in 1st on dirt and gravel no problem. Haven't tried a clutch dump on pavement though, afraid of the consequences.
