So after many years of loving the way that 3rd and 4th gen 4runners looked with the rear spoiler, I decided that my 1st gen was going to get an upgrade.

I measured up a 2nd gen that I had available and noticed that the dimensions were incredibly identical. Armed with this knowledge I rolled the dice and decided to order a 2nd gen JDM spoiler from eBay. After it arrived I was pleasantly surprised that it looks like a perfect fit. Today I decided to start the mounting since the hardtop is getting a new paint job while my 4runner undergoes a 3.4 swap.

I also took this oportunity to loose the raingutter mount rack I have been using for years in favor of a XTerra roofrack. I really wanted a frontier xtra cab rack, but since so many frontier sold without the rack, they hold their value on eBay for those that want to put int on their non-rack equipped trucks. (about $275-$350 shipped) Xterras on the other hand mostly or all came with the rack, so they are much easier and cheaper (about $100 - $150 shipped) to get your hands on. Only problem, the xterra has the stadium seating and the rack extends from the front to the rear of the vehicle. I plan to shorten the length after the center foot mounts and also shorten the depth on the front mounts so I can have the front feet mount right at the front of the hardtop.

The spoiler is mounted in the picts, while the rack is just laying in place for now.

 

was wondering how long it would take someone to put the xterra roof rack on a 4runner. looks good, just paint the xtraa outta the rack then yur set.

 

Thanks, yeah I plan to paint the tubing of the rack black and have dark grey stickers with 4Runner. That should wipe out any of the residual Nissanness. : )

What did you have to do to mount the spoiler?

 

The top has two fiberglass layers, and inner and the outer.

There are 4 mounting lugs integrated into the spoiler, I simply drilled the 4 appropriate holes from the outside in. I then enlarged the inner holes to accept the 4 deep socket nuts that hold the spoiler on. I will drill a 5th hole that will feed the wiring for the integrated third brake light.

Took me a total of 30 minutes with a lot of re-measuring and procrastinating about drilling the top.

 

How much was the spoiler?

 

I got lucky and picked it up on eBay for $67 with shipping. Since then I haven't been able to find one for less than $275 on eBay. I used JDM spoiler 4runner as search criteria.

How do you plan on making the front mounts fit in the rack tubes ?. I was actually looking at an xterra roof rack a while back, but i just wasn`t sure on how to make the front mounts work.

 

Man that looks decent (once you paint over the xterra junk...LOL).... I may have to steal this idea on the roof rack.

 

A little cutting and grafting is necessary. First you have to cut about 16" approx out of the length, then you have to cut about 4" from the front bend length. I am going to assemble the tube back together with a 1.5" PVC pipe insert. I will have to sand down the circumference a few hundreds of an inch to get it in, but shouldn't be too much of a problem. Since the front feet won't be carrying any weight, they need only keep the pipes together. The load will actually be on the center foot mounts that will be approx a foot behind.

Man, I really like that spoiler...grrrrrrrr crap one more "on the Pile" project....
