Thanks guys. I'm definetly easing into the new winter look. I was a little worried that the roofrack and spoiler would be a bit too much, but after having it on there for a week I'm loving it. Painting the rack tubes dark grey metallic like the mirrors (I know hard to tell from black) makes it blend in a bit more.

I wired in the third brake light tonight because I know if I waited any longer it would make it to the "next spring list". Now I can chalk the spoiler up to a "safety upgrade". I'm thinking my insurance company isn't going to go for a rate reduction.

 

I just bought a set of Nissan xterra racks!
Going to chop it up and paint it today.

Quick question, and please don't think I'm being an ass for asking this, but how much can you really haul up there on that rack? I'm guessing skis and things like that are about all that will bolt up. Correct me if I'm wrong as I've never dealt with that rack before.

 

It's actually pretty strong. The rack factory mounted to an Xterra is rated for 125lbs. It held the entire weight of the roof when I hoisted it up to put the roof back on, which is probably more than that. I think the fibeglass roof would be the weak point before the rack would crumple.

 

I 'm mainly going to use it for a 32' ladder and possibly bikes.
I have not mounted the racks ,yet. They seem pretty solid.

 

how was it drilling thru the very top to mount the feet?? I just ordered some yakima 60" tracks and I will have to do some drilling on the top. just wondering for when i get home from overseas??

 

It's not bad. It is a easy drill because it's fiberglass, but the first hole makes you sick. Once you realize there is no turning back then it's OK. Just measure alot before drilling.

I used rivnuts that didn't require me to drill through both layers of the roof (there is an inner and outer layer). I decided last minut to drill through anyway. This way if it does get a leak or something it won't fill up the roof with water, it will leak into the interior and I'll know whats going on.

themonch, cool thanks for the info man. im not sure the hardware of the yakimas they didn't have much info on it they just said nuts and bolts!! ha ha kinda vague but I'm sure it won't be to bad. thats good to know about the two layers though. i'll try not to puke as I drill the first hole. Thanks again.

 

the rack looks good i need ideas for a on top that i can fit my spare tire up on and handy man as well as a tool box for my self recovery supplys
