Cut and reassembled rack

Left work a little early today and decided to tackle the rack mods. It was a total of three cuts per main rail. I have a cut-off saw so it was quick work. The rails are reassembled with a PVC pipe insert that I will later epoxy once all of the foot mounts are located and drilled. This left me with only one butted mating point that is barely noticeable and will be filled in and painted along with the rest of the rack to a dark grey that will match my sideview mirrors. (you can see it in the close-up of front foot) I'm really liking the way it looks and can't wait to see the top back on the truck with it.

I'd screw with people and leave the Xterra sticker on it, slower people will think it's an "early one" ir "1st gen" X. But I enjoy messin with people and would lie and tell them they're right. Does look like you got it to fit nicely though.

Thanks, awesome idea on the spoiler. I was just about to mount a 2nd gen Limited rear deflector when I saw this thread. So I looked and found one like you got on ebay for $70 shipped (with peeling clear coat, but it'll get repainted anyway).

Nice, yeah it really makes a difference in the look. Very sporty. I can't wait to have it painted along with the hardtop and roofrack. Usually I'm dreading the day that I have to admit to myself every season that the top has to go back on for winter...not this year!

I'll just be happy if I can roll the back window down without a minor case of asphyxiation (but it does look good, can't wait)

Any update on how it's held up with load? Updated pics maybe? I found a rack for $60 and was thinking of picking it up. Just curious on how it's holding up. Great idea btw!

No new updates yet. I'm im the middle of my 3.4 swap right now and once it's done I am going to start focusing painting the top and finishing the rack mounting. Probably a couple of weeks. Check out corax's link above if you want to see pictures of a painted spoiler. (Looks great by the way corax)

I know you mentioned earlier that you would have wanted to find one from a Frontier but they were hard to find, but would one of those fit without modding?
What's the new clearance height with the rack installed? I barely fit in the garage now, and that's what's keeping me from mounting a permanent rack.

The rack adds another 4-5" to the height. I originally did want the frontier rack since it looked offhand like it would be easier to fit since it doesn't do the tiered step down for the stadium seating of a Xterra. It would have had to be mounted more to the back of the 4Runner hardtop to span the rear quarter windows that wrap up onto the top. I didn't know how this was going to look and was a little worried that it might not look right and balanced. I only took preliminary measurements on Frontiers before I abandoned that idea for the Xterra rack for cost and availablity reasons. I am guessing it would go on with little or slight mods to the front feet.
