Mechanical Fuel Pump

83 twd pickup 22r engine.

I took a good long trip after changing my oil......made it home and everything was fine.

I was going to make a quick run to the quickyMart and all of the sudden the engine bucked caughed and quit running.

The guy in his drivway heard me trying to start it and said I was not getting any fuel.

Sounds about right to me..........

The manual is about worthless for checking the fuel pump and filter.

After reading a few here I think that I can take a line off and crank it............if fuel spits out then the fuel pump is fine......look at the carburator?

Any help, advice, step by step web page would help me out..........I've never messed with the filter or pump.

Thanks.

Will it start if you spray carb cleaner or starter fluid into the carb?

I had the same problem with mine until I noticed that my idle cut-off solenoid wasn't working correctly. Turned out that the connector for the carb wiring was "loose". I don't know if the earlier ones were the same way though.

As others stated just because the fuel pump pumps fuel doesn't mean it is sending enough or too much.

Mine also ticked like crazy as Gnarly4x mentioned.

I was wondering if there was anything electric going to the carburator, fuel pump, fuel filter that could go wrong........I have no Idea what a "idle cutoff soleniod" is.............got a picture of that?

Dang........I am not a Mechanic.

Anyhows I had a few hours yesterday so I started the troubleshoot.
The first stupid thing I did was disconect the fuel filter without clamping it.......duh live and learn and honey please put that cigerette out!!

So I took the air filter off and checked out the carburator.........looked good....

went strait to pulling off the fuel pump...............pulled it.

Seemed to work ok.............I could push it in and blow fuel in my face.

Bought a new one anyhows.......slapped it on and vroooom....fired right up.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
