4X4 shifter issue, and "name That Shackle!!!"

So, have an issue that I had with both of my 84's, the pickup and now the 4Runner. Also, the shackles, which are not an issue, but just curious who manufactures these beasts, they are HUGE!!!

First, the shifter. I have a problem with 1st to 2nd shifting while in 4lo. The trans. shifter runs into the 4x shifter and knocks it into nuetral. I have replaced my shifter seat bushing, tried it with the boots off, tried different shifter positions, which do not work due to dash and center console. Now, one thing I did notice, while in jonny's 83, the shifter is taller, which is nice, and has what looks like the shape I need that won't hit the 4x shifter. Has anyone had this issue and what did you do to remedy the problem. Here is some pics with a description above each, and the shackles last.

This is in first gear and 4lo

This is in second and 4lo

This is while pulling it out of first

And the notorious shackles, who makes these things?

Pull the t-case shifter out and turn it 180 degrees before reinstalling. That should make 4L over and to the right. If that doesn't work, try cold bending one or both shifters to clear each other.

Tried 180, then I can't go into reverse. By cold bending, you mean just pull it and bend it? Also, would it be possible to put an older shifter assembly in? Like an 83, that appears to have the correct bend, or would it not work?

The shackles look like the old dick cepeck shackles i had on my truck a few years ago. Not sure just a guess but they look really similar.

I checked them all, TG, allpro, marlin, procomp, dick cepek. The old daystar extreme shackles look kinda like them, but the bolts are half the size!

Tcase shifter should be leaning forward and to the right when in low range. If it hits in reverse, I would try bending it like 4crawler said.

Shackles look home built.

Yes, at the base, the shifter is ~1/2" steel rod, bend that. And by cold, that means not heating up the metal. Why? Steel rod is set into a rubber compound in the upper part of the shifter (noise dampening) and heating the rod will melt the rubber and you can ruin the shifter.

Also, would it be possible to put an older shifter assembly in? Like an 83, that appears to have the correct bend, or would it not work?
Yes it will work fine as well.

I recall Marlin just uses a length of pipe slipped over the end of the shifter and bends it in place. Or pull out out and secure the base in a vise or something and bend the same way. You can see the smaller part of the shifter between the base and the wider upper part:

Thanks for posting this Sean. Maybe I'll learn how to properly fix my shifter. Mine is a little too close when I go into reverse while in 4L. It's a real pain on the trail. Woohoo, another project.

I pulled the boot (mcuh better triple layer design) and both shifters out of a 93 4Runner. They plugged right in. Much nicer shifter positions as they are on opposit sides than the 85 was. Total cost was $15 at the u-pull-it. Someone might have replaced one of your shifter levers.
Not a bad idea, but I like the height of the 83 shifter, just feels better.

there is a shifter seat on the transfer cases. at least the forward shift RF1A cases 80-95 bucket seat t-case that is found behind a G52, G54, W56 (89-95), R151F transmission

I can't speak of the RF1A top shift cases behind said transmissions with bucket seats.

need proof ?

RF1A 1980-1995 Gear Driven Forward G52, G54, W56 (89-95), R151F (with bench seat) 2.28 21, 23 (behind R151F) Can be identified by the 7 bolt rear cover. reference: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/

The Blue seat is for the forward shift style transfer case shift handle base of a transmission, such as a G52, G54, W56-C, W56-D, W56-E, R151F, and 1988-95 R150F applications with forward shifting transfer case shift bases. reference: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...ver-ball-seats and http://www.marlincrawler.com/hardwar...-forward-shift

I wasn't aware that there was a difference between bench and bucket till i looked up that reference again on 4x4wire. All I knew is I have the forward shift and need the seat bushing.

You got the 4runner which I believe have all bucket seats? which means all have top shift.
