well i finally passed california smog...

but i was comparing the numbers for this smog to my last smog 2 years ago, and there is a significant difference,

this years' numbers
at idle, 765 rpm. %CO2= 14.8, %O2= 0.1, HC=78, CO= 0.28
at 2500rpm. % CO2=14.9, %O2= 0.1, HC=18, CO= 0.03

last years' numbers
at idle, 939 rpm. %CO2= 15.2, %O2= 0.0, HC=7, CO= 0.00
at 2500rpm, %CO2= 15.1, %O2= 0.0, HC=9, CO= 0.01

i was pretty shocked that it passed, because when you listen to the engine when its idling, the rpms seem to go up and down. the engine constantly dies on me. say your going 45mph or so with the tach at 2500rpm, if you let off the gas, and put the clutch in, the idle will drop below 300rpm and bob there for a little while. sometimes it catches itself and comes back to 800 or so, but it has mostly been dying that way. it died on me 6 times yesterday after getting it smogged. and no, the brake pedal has zero affect on the idle.

and the engine feels like a true gutless wonder right now. timing is correct. 150psi compression all around, and it runs kinda rough at idle, almost like its misfiring

I don't know much, but I would change out the fuel filter to start with.

Start with the basics and go from there. When was the last time you did a tune up? Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, all the consumable stuff.

The oxygen sensor can cause issues if it is reading giving up the ghost, it is a maintenance item also.

You cat could be losing efficiency also, could be part of the reason why

Check the TPS resistances and the timing/idle speed, make sure all of that is up to snuff.

Move on to the EGR system, verify that it is working properly and not causing problems.

Any codes stored in the computer?

If you have good compression in all cyclinders, then, you most likely have a solid motor mechanically, but some EFI or emmisions components are wearing out, or something out of adjustment/clogged, etc.

Good luck.

Mike
