my truck is a 93 xtra cab 5 speed with 203.000 miles on it, and im researching building the 22re or get a 2.7 or 3.4 for it, what is all needed in a swap and what would be the best option in your opinion. thanx

are you trying to keep it street legal? is the motor still running? will be towing with it?

whats your mechanical/fabrication background?

yes I want to keep it street legal, yes it is running & not happy with the power of this engine. Its all stock now, I have installed starters, altinators, brakes, headers, tune- ups, etc. that's about the most I've done. I have had the 2.7 engine it a previous Tacoma that was ok.

Well you can dump money into your 22re and maybe make 160hp or you can get a 2.7 which makes around 160hp stock and will get better mileage and reliability over a highly modified 22re.

What kinda driving do you mostly do?

I'd guess getting a 2.4 would rock, paying for it not so much.

Just came back from the machine shop this past fri, the smart guy there stated one could somewhat easily get an extra ~30% out of rebuild tricks....
~30 % on a 4 cyl 115 HP engine is a huge gain but not really that big of a deal in overall HP.

For the $$, it might be better starting w/ something that has what one is looking for prior to starting machine work.

would you build the 22re with that many miles. or would you swap. will I be happy with a hopped up 22re or should I just swap engines. the 3.4 sounds good. what are the pros and cons of what I want to do.

building a 22re to make the power a 5vzfe makes would cost more than swapping a 5vzfe into a vehicle with a 3vze. Since yours is a 22re powered rig, it will cost more, especially if you dont/cant do your own work, than swapping it into a 3vze powered rig. Both will be expensive. You could turbo a 22re and get decent power, especially if you built it to breathe better, but you would have to build it to the 22r-te spec or chance blowing stuff. Stock 22re bottoms ends can stand like 5-6 psi boost.

is swapping a 3.4 into a 1993 22re rig the same as swapping a 3.4 into a 1993 3.0 truck. is the swap the same, what is the difference and what will I need. there is so much info on swapping 3.0 to 3.4 but hardly any 22re to 3.4 are they the same?
