mistergarrett's 1990 Pickup Build-Up Thread
I've been lurking quite a while now and YT made it possible to make my old yota drivable(now sold). So Im back to my 22re that is now lockedup. So I got antsy and started disassembly. Having helped here and there with another HG replacement and doing a lower intake on a 98 chevy lumina, I feel confident in this project. This needs to be a DD ASAP as i am down to one vehicle, but i wanna be able to go off road and not worry to much about breaking something every time I wheel.
What I'm looking to get is the best MPG as possible so no real power adders that will sacrifice gas milage. And as cost effective as possible.
Feel free to give any input good or bad. Id like some info on cheap parts and machine shops (in east central indiana). I dont have any air tools not even a hoist, but i do have a 2 gallon compressor. So Im trying to keep that in mind so I dont get in over my head.
Heres some old pics before the "lock up".

A Little Background info
I still owe for this truck but the car lot told me they would give time to get it running without making payments for a while. They told me it had a HG job done and it has a new TC and chain, but the heads weren't redone so i doubt the block was decked. So after it locked up(in the driveway) i found the milkshake. So here i go, time to rebuild.
The truck has a homemade exhaust with no O2 Sensor and the knock sensor wire is disconnected. So Codes 25 and 52(i think) are present. It had the loping idle issue but before it locked up until i put the truck in "diag Mode" and it quits, but still has a high idle.
The roll bar is improperly installed and doesnt line up to bolt it to the wheel wells.
A Tranny bracket(that bolts to the block)is broke.
Cracked windshield
Interior smells like gear oil
Im sure im missing some stuff, but I'll tackle it as i can afford it.
Money is my main issue.

I started to disassemble and got access to a pressure washer. So I taped some stuff off and did some lite cleaning.
Ive messed around with all the vacume lines so im not lableling hoses lust baggin up bolts(new bolts hopefully going in). I have a haynes that i used to check vacume lines hunting down a high idle issue. Plus im gonna try to replace as much of them as i can.
The next thing Im gonna need is a hoist to get the block out.

i did not take my block out, so i can't help you on that one.
i'm thinking a couple hundred pounds. i'm also thinking that you should get a hoist to do that given the amount of obstacles....versus hernia surgery.

I planned on askin around for a hoist, and im gonna have to be generous to get to my house.
This truck is rough as far as some wireing(no o2, no AC,) but I know for a fact the driveline is strong except the engine and clutch. When i got it, one hub would not lock, i took it apart and put it back per YT and i had 4 wheel. Took it to the local stone quary and climbed a couple of hills. I seen ppl there for years so i stopped in talked to some and they said the owners overlooked everything as long as the place didnt get full of trash. I had free trash pickup at the time so my Boy and I took a half load of trash outta there. Turns out 2 ppl left there trucks( a dakota and a jeep) out there for over 2 months and shut the place down. I wudda pulled them out but i never saw the owners.
After seeing the new TC cover and still had vavle noise I knew the PO half @$$'d a fix. It was past due for a redo. The last week of the month and on I should have about $100 to $150 a week to spend. I'll have everything but the short block out today, and I'll post pics, PICS PICS.
Also if anyone one has questions about my plans, please ask in case i might not be planning for something crucial.
And always open to suggestions and criticism .

copper block or head sealer.
i used it in my lumina 3 times, but it was for a intake manifold leak and rmoved thermostat and bypassed heater core. 210K is when it leaked faster than i could pour water in it. DEXCOOL victim.
i got the engine to free'd up trying to break the crank bolt loose. i probably could have put it all back togeather and it would have fired up, but 220k.. its time to redo the bottom end too. I'll get pics of the valves and pistons tonight hopefully.

While waiting on money, i've called around and found a shop on muncie. 25-35 mins away.
McGumegil's Engine Performance. 3 or 4 day turnaround $450 labor for block crank and head.
He's gonna call me back with his parts quote. i will then ask what it includes for a comparison to engnbldr.com and other prices.
I've got to much time on my hands and no freakin money. It does give me time to clean up my hacked wireing harness and maybe a coat of paint on the engine compartment. That kinda cheap stuff. The pressure washer did amazing but bent some radiator fins. gonna try the hair comb trick to fix it.
Other than that just been cleanin parts.
