1981 22R Fuel Pump
Has anyone ever had excessive ticking noises coming from their mechanical fuel pump? Is there a new fuel pump that is preferred for replacement? I do not want a cheap one. Input is appreciated.

This one should work for you. As per the ticking, when you pull it, compare it to the new one, make sure all of the parts are present and nothing might have fell into the engine/oil pan.

You sure it's not coming from the valves or timing chain? Mine never ticked. I would buy an OEM pump. I had an aftermarket one go out after only about 5,000 miles. Although the guy at Napa said that it was the first time he's ever seen anyone bring one back before...
But they're about $50 at Napa compared to over $100 at Toyota. The second aftermarket one I bought it still holding up now after about 8,000 miles...hopefully I just got a bad one before.

YES! a fuel pump will tick/thump/knock to the point where you think that your little 22R is about to fly to pieces...replace it and you'll be fine. As OC said, it's good to have a spare on hand as well. And there is nothing wrong with the NAPA pumps...you can get 2 of those for less than one at the stealership.
