Piece broke off block

My friend bought an 83 toyota 4x4 last week. The guy had the topend tore down to replace the head gasket b4 we got it. Last night and today I have been putting it all back together. I got the head on the exhaust and intake bolted up and the distributor in. When we went to put oil in it, and it was leaking really bad from the front of the block. Well we found what it was. There was a chunk of metal broke off the front of the block where the head mates to it. We found the piece. It was sitting on the battery tray with some nuts and bolts. It has a threaded hole in it that matches the hole below the cam and distributor gears. I tried telling him we could pull the block and get the piece welded back in, but he wants to just JB weld it to save time. I dont like the idea. I like doing things right the first time instead of quick fixes. If I cant talk him into getting it welded, how long do you guys think it will last with the JB weld

You are speaking of the "hidden" bolt. Ties the head in to the timing cover, get it welded, do not JB weld it. If you are this far into the engine, why go cheap at this point, just to have more heart ache down the road? Also, that bolt must not be in there either, if the tab is broken off.

He said the block... not the the timing cover unless he donsen't know the diff or not.... Can we get a pic.... My mind is in the image you broke a coner off the block where a head bolt goes... which i believe would be extremely hard to repair if at all... but it kinda sounds like your talking about the t-cover "hidden bolt" seanmearse mentioned.... You mean its broke out the head or the timing cover. I would get a new timing cover if it was me.... weld jobs are not always a guaranteed leak proof and i've seen bookoo weld jobs leak... Its up to you but i would get a new t-cover... (Try to get us a pic)

He is definatly talking timing cover. Has to be, especially about the hole under the cam and dizzy gears, thats the hidden bolt.

If it's a piece of the block .. forget it .. just get a new block . they are VERY difficult to weld , and usually very brittle .

there a dime a dozen ..
I have taken more to the recycler then I can count ..and I cant even give them away !!

If it is the bolt i have been mentioning, he wouldnt need a new block, just a cover. We need a response, better yet, pics.

wouldn't you have to drop a block off an engine stand/hoist to beak anything off of it? My guess is also the hidden bolt in the timing cover. Very possible if someone lifted that head off and didn't remove this bolt first.

with the head off the block. it is the forward most bolt hole. In front of the timing chain. The head sits on it

Def timing cover "hidden" bolt then. Someone prob tried to take the head off before and forgot that bolt and broke it. Your going to need a new timing cover its hard to fix a piece like that.

same concept on the engine. Give him a call, might take the same timing cover, not sure though.
