I just finished changing the timing belt & water pumps etc. to my 3vze and started the engine. It sounds ok but idles around 2000 rpm, and stalls when I press the gas pedal. Also the exhaust is burning hot. I mean really hot, even from the end of the pipe, after minute of running. I had difficulties in setting the timing because the marks are little less than half tooth off on cams, in different directions..

So, is the timing off or what could be wrong? I guess vacuum leak would not have this big effect? It was running fine before and I touched nothing else than timing..

 

it's a pain in the butt, believe me. you might want the arrows in the same direction at least. see how that works. did you touch the thermo? possible its in backwards? been awhile since the water pump was changed...

 

I think I tried every setup around the marks and they were still always off somehow.. With old belt they were spot on. I wonder if the belt is faulty?

I also changed water pump. I double checked that the thermostat is the right way (spring towards engine). Engine ran only about one minute. Yesterday it ran only about 10 seconds and exhaust headers were immediately burning hot.

I checked all the vacuum lines etc. once more and there does not seem to be leaks.

I think I'll check the belt once more this evening if this flu gets better..

You mean run the engine with the cap off & heater on etc? I did that. But I could not even run the engine long enough to get the thermostat to open.. Exhaust pipe was so hot that smoke was coming from under the car I was afraid it was going to catch fire.. It wasn't like this before for sure..

 

My concern is the timing.

When i got my engine in the bay and fixed the timing belt for the third time in a day, i ran it bare. No radiator no accesory belts alt, even the exhaust hoses weren't connected. ha

It ran crappy but that's because i rewired my distributor wrong. However it wasn't hot or anything. When i had to put ANOTHER belt on a couple weeks later i bought a brand new gator back. I had the same problem i couldn't get it perfect, possible it needs some stretching or something. I just threw that belt on the best i could, they were facind the right direction just ever so slightly off the mark.

I'm positive you made sure everything is were it needs to be right? TDC and all that noise.

 

if the timing is ahead too much doesnt it make it run lean and overheat? vacum leak maybe? im sure if the timing is off you will be ok because 3.0L's are non interferance engines so you are fine there

 

Timing was one tooth off from crankshaft, so cams were ahead. LH cam is now at the mark but RH cam is less than half tooth late. Engine runs fine now and does not overheat.

It did look a lot like huge vacuum leak.
