A340 questions

G'day all,

Figure it's time for an a340 question... ('90 4runner SR5 22RE) after the weekends drive... Put about 300mi on the highway on it and was noticing a few issues...

First issue was a grindy/lurchy hunt to O/D early in the trip... Not sure how better to explain it - not like shifting without the clutch - more like a chattered shift?

Rest of the trip - any time cruise control was on - the transmission would seem hold out of O/D, stay revving at 4000-4500 for a prolonged time (minutes sometimes) before finally shifting to O/D. But as soon as cruise was turned off - would drop into O/D immediately?

Only other issue I've noticed with the transmission - is occasionally it doesn't seem to shift out when coming to a sudden stop (rpms drop into the ~300 range for a few seconds).

Obviously need to dig into that A340 - just wondering what I'm going to be digging for...

Thanks in advance!

G'day mate. I don't know about the first problem, but the not holding OD with the CC on, was normal on my old A340H, even did that when the truck was brand new. Very irritating I know, it resulted in me almost never using the CC. Funny after I did a 3.4 swap, same CC but different tranny (A340F) it never happens now. I think it was an engine load thing.

Good luck with it, make mine a 4X mate

Oh on that, I'd suspect a torque converter problem or a shift solenoid problem. May also be the cause of the 1st problem too, I couldn't say for sure though.

most problems you have with the a340 is the three solenoids on the valve body.
you can change them out for less to nothing and your problem will probably go away.
all ive read up about these trannies is 95% solenoid related.

gonna change my one day...

stock tires - this is the wifes truck - 235/75/15's...

No error codes for the transmission, used my magic box (manual control box - built for the vw swap project) electronically everything seems to be fine on the transmission side.

I've had some of the same OD shifting issues on my V6 auto with the CC on. I suspect the same thing as above. Under certain load conditions it doesn't respond as you would expect. When I drive without CC it seems to shift just fine, but I think that is due to my "manual" feedback though the gas pedal being different from what the CC does. The CC may modulate the throttle faster/slower/differently than I do with my foot, which tricks the tranny into keeping the OD off, or disengaging it if it is on. Sometimes I am driving down the road, have to turn the CC off, get it to shift into OD, and then turn the CC back on. Then it doesn't do that again for a month or so. Huh?

The shifting problem you are seeing, I would suspect to be solenoids also. I almost think those solenoids are a maintenance item, as many times as they get discussed as going bad and causing shifting issues.

One place to buy them:

#1, you're not a 2 foor driver, right?

& 2, I know the brake switch has to do with the torque converter lock-up... I'm wondering if it goes bad, if it'll show up on a code...
