1st Gen 4runner rear window key switch not working? Try this.

My rear key switch would roll the window down but not up. I ran all the diagnostics that I could find on everything, relay, wires, everything but the switch(hard to get to). So I figured the switch must be bad.

That leads to potential problems, unavailable at the dealer, the used one may not work, you have to rekey it to match the rest of the truck, etc. So I left it alone.

Yestarday I had the tailgate apart(Hammering it back straight). When I got the plate light trim off I noticed the plastic piece on the back of the key switch, the one with the window wires attached to it, was pulled out from the body of the tumbler.

I cleaned it all real good and put one spot of crazy glue on the plastic and put it back in the tumbler body. Held it until it dried.

Later after the tailgate was back together I tried the key switch, sure enough it works in both directions.

I have been using it all day and it seems to doing really good.

You can get the plate trim off without taking the window and regulator out. close the tailgate, role up the window, climb inside the cargo area. Take the carpet cover off, and the inspection plate. On the outside wall of the gate up by the bottom of the window you will see two 10mm nuts, and a plastic clip between them. Remove the 10mm nuts, have someone on the outside to catch the trim, and release the clip. Then unhook the wiring connector.

Sorry for not taking pics, I was in a hurry as I new it was going to rain all today and I did not feel like riding the HD in the rain again today.

Hope it helps some one out there get their window working again.

No Worries. Hope it helps.

If you really want your rear window to work like new. Take it all apart, clean everything, Regrease everything with white lithium grease, clean all the rubber, and spray with a good cylicone. Then reassemble it.

Push all the safety latches in and you can roll the window up with the tailgate down. Be careful not to break the glass, there is a reason for the safety latches. It works I have done the same thing
