is it easily accomplished? HELL NAH!!!!!! it'd take WAY too much work for what it's worth to make an actual ram air hood.

 

yea it is easier to just make a fiberglass hood scoop kuz cutting out the opening in ur stock hood scoop wouldn't be that easy

 

Diesel engines have intercooler on top of the engine and scoop will blow air into it. On gas engine if you open it, it will just blow air on top of the engine (wouldn't do much of a use) as well as rain, snow, mud which is not good for the engine in general.
I'd say, leave it as a fake scoop, unless you want to make a custom routing and send this air to the rad or any other places (this going to be complicated....).

 

I have a sport, w/scoop. I notice that snow blows over the scoop which leads me to believe that the scoop is too low and too small to grab enough air to give you a ram air effect.

 

That's true, Gerdo. At speed, there is a "dead zone" of sorts beginning at a few inches from the front edge of the hood, and ending somewhere on the windshield. For this reason, true ram-air intakes are placed as far forward as possible...where air pressure is the greatest.

To the OP...even if you could make it work...you most likely wouldn't see any gains whatsoever.

The reason you see this is because the hood scoop is blocked off and the air has no where to go but around the hood scoop. If you opened up the hood scoop, plenty of air would enter the engine bay.

 

I will tell you that my clear coat is flaking of my scoop FAST (the insert). There must be a fair amount of air blowing over it.

 

Even an open scoop isn't going to create a vacuum so even if it's open it doesn't mean it will draw in more air but it will allow a little more air but also road debris and dirt and a dirty engine runs hotter so you'd be negating the effects of the extra air.

My scoop insert's paint is flaking too but it's the sun doing it not the air passing over it.

IMO it's just not worth the trouble on a stock (or even SC'd) 4Runner since even if you saw a possible gain you won't notice it in real world driving. 3rd gens with the scoop have been around for over 11 years now and I've yet to see anything that has worked truly worked or saw any benefit from an open scoop.
